The Bellator Fighting Championship announced that Eddie Alvarez will rematch former DREAM lightweight champion Shinya Aoki in the main event of Bellator 66 on Friday, April 20th. Bellator revealed the match-up earlier today via Twitter and on Cleveland.com.
Alvarez (22-3) was previously submitted by Aoki in the first round of the initial meeting in December 2008. He would go on to win his next seven fights which included becoming the first the first Bellator lightweight champion in 2009. In his most recent bout at Bellator 58, Alvarez would lose the title to Michael Chandler.
Aoki (30-5, 1 NC), a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, is widely considered one of the top lightweights in MMA. He has won ten of his past eleven bouts and has been victorious in his last seven.
The details on the rest of the Bellator 66 fight card have not been revealed but it is expected to include women’s fighter Jessica Eye.
Bellator 66 will take place from the International Exposition Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
