UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall could get his long-awaited fight with Jon Jones next year.
Tom Aspinall and the other top UFC heavyweights are moving on from Jon Jones after the now-former titleholder announced his retirement in June. Afterwards, Aspinall was promoted to undisputed heavyweight champ, and will make his first defense at UFC 321 in October against Ciryl Gane.
Aspinall’s next heavyweight chapter comes as Jones plots a potential return to the Octagon next year. After U.S. President Donald Trump and UFC CEO Dana White confirmed plans to host a fight card on the lawn of The White House next year, one of the big fights for the event that White teased was Jones vs. Aspinall.
If Aspinall is victorious over Gane in October, Jones could potentially be his next opponent, but Aspinall is willing to give up headlining at The White House to other UFC stars.
During a recent appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Aspinall appeared to dismiss fighting Jones at The White House.
“It’s just boring, it’s just so boring,” Aspinall said of Jones’s planned comeback. “It has spent 0 seconds in my mind. I’m not interested, and the world shouldn’t be interested either, because what’s the point? It’s false hope.
“It doesn’t not interest me, but it doesn’t really interest me. It would be a cool experience, but I feel like the Americans should get the shot at The White House. I’m not American, Trump and the political stance in America doesn’t bother me at all.
“I’m not a big Trump supporter or against him, I don’t know anything about American politics,” Aspinall continued. “Not American, don’t live there, don’t do anything there apart from paying taxes and fighting there. So all of that stuff just is irrelevant to me.”
Jones says he’s ready to fight whoever is the UFC heavyweight champion at the time when he plans on returning to the Octagon. If Gane defeats Aspinall, a Jones vs. Gane rematch likely won’t be enticing to the recently retired star.
Aspinall hasn’t fought since defending the interim heavyweight title against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 last year. He won the interim belt by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295, following Jones’s withdrawal from the main event due to injury.
Despite Jones’s plans for a ‘historic’ comeback, he might not get his wish granted.
When asked about Jones potentially headlining the UFC’s planned White House card next year, White dismissed the possibility, saying he ‘can’t take the risk’ of awarding Jones with a fight after his checkered past outside of the Octagon. Despite White’s snub, Jones remains adamant in his plans to fight at The White House next year.
Jones finished former UFC heavyweight titleholder Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 last year, in what was initially thought to be his final appearance in the Octagon. After his latest comeback teases, Jones re-entered the UFC’s drug testing pool in hopes of returning next year.
The UFC’s planned card at The White House is still almost a full year away, and a lot can change between now and next July. In the meantime, Jones will continue to assure White that he’s worthy of the privilege of competing at the U.S. capital.
