How weird does this sound? If you’re a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver currently outside the top 10 in the points, you’re cheering for Kasey Kahne right now. As weird as that is, it’s true. Kasey Kahne currently holds the top wildcard spot to make the 2013 NASCAR Chase for the Cup as he’s 11th in the standings with two victories in 2013. With only three races to go before the Chase starts drivers that are outside the top 10 need Kahne to get into the top 10 in points. Right now Kahne is a huge threat to them. His two wins will trump everyone else’s as with three races left it’s going to be hard for someone to sneak in and win multiple times. If Kahne moves into the top 10 then it’s up to the next two drivers with wins which helps guys like Martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano, Ryan Newman or even winless guys like Jeff Gordon and Jamie McMurray. Kahne won at Bristol in the Spring and has a good shot at returning to victory lane in the Irwin Tools Night race Saturday night. If he doesn’t win you know he has a handful of drivers rooting him on to have a good finish and get himself back into the top 10 in the standings. Kahne is only four points behind Greg Biffle for 10th which is the final automatic qualifying spot to make the Chase. He typically runs well at Bristol and next weekend’s race in Atlanta so he could realistically move into the top 10 and help the bubble drivers. This will be a good story to watch Saturday night.   Eric Smith is the Lead Motorsports Writer for Race Review Online.
