Found August 16, 2012 on Celtics Green ...a boston celtics blog.:
Larry Bird retired on August 18,1992 and as Magic Johnson said when Larry's number was retired, there will never, ever be another Larry Bird. I wrote my tribute to Larry on August 2. Lex had several great articles written by the great Bob Ryan about Larry here, here, here, here, here, and here. Grampa Celtic sure does love Larry.
I know there will be many more tributes and articles about Larry this week to commemorate the anniversary of his retirement. Larry was the greatest forward this league has ever seen and watching him was like watching a master work his craft. He was simply amazing. Here's a tidbit from one of Bob Ryan's articles:
Did you know that Larry Bird was the first player since Elgin Baylor who made it a practice to throw the ball off the backboard in order to get it back so he could lay it in? After Bird had done so in a 1982 game against the Bullets (getting himself a 3-point play), one of his teammates was aghast. "You should have heard McHale," laughed Bird. "He said, 'Damn, Larry. It's a close game!' "

And, to the question "Did Larry Bird ever goaltend?" the answer is "Yup." On Feb. 9, 1988, he goaltended an Akeem Olajuwon shot in the course of a 44-point (17-for-27) effort against the Rockets. This is the same Olajuwon he beat in a jump ball in the first quarter of Game 6 during the 1986 Finals. It defied the laws of physics, but Bird did it.
After the Jump are a couple of videos to watch and remember just how good he was.

Larry Bird Personified Greatness for 13 Season With Celtics (Video)

The fans never wanted him to leave, but Larry Bird's back would no longer allow him to play with the same zeal he had for more than a decade. So 20 years ago Saturday, Bird announced his retirement after 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics. Bird took with him three NBA championship rings, three Most Valuable Player trophies and numerous other honors, including 12 All-Star games...

Missing Larry, and what he represents, 20 years later

This still bums me out. I’m so happy Larry Bird doesn’t play today.  Somehow, some way, people would over-analyze him, overreact to him, and over-emphasize things that aren’t important about him. The back injury that ultimately shortened his career?  He hurt it putting up a retaining wall at his Indiana home… when he easily could have paid someone. He broke his hand during...

The Top Five Greatest Celtics Teams: #4 1983-’84 Celtics

Boston Celtics forward Larry Bird came into his own in the 1983-’84 season. The fourth best team in Boston Celtics’ history was the 1983-’84 team. This squad was coming off a devastating loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in the postseason the year before with a very talented roster. They had too many players who filled similar roles. President Red Auerbach signed guard Danny Ainge...

The Dream Team. The greatest team ever assembled. A collection of some of the greatest players to ever play the game. ….. and Christian Laettner. Well, the Dookie can finally get some burn for the Dream Team… if you get the new NBA 2K13 game.  Yep, you can start Laettner if you want… you can turn the fatigue off, turn the difficulty way down, and drop a hundred on some poor...

John Salley on Jordan: ‘I just don’t think he’s the greatest player ever’

First it was Jim Boeheim, now it is former Detroit Pistons Bay Boy member, John Salley doubting the greatness of Michael Jordan. Boeheim raised eyebrows earlier this week after saying that he felt LeBron James may have surpassed Michael Jordan at this point. But Salley, is the first current or former player that has spoken [...]

All Time NBA Mock Draft- Kevin McHale v Magic Johnson

As we head into the challenge round of our All Time NBA Mock Draft we have learned a couple of things about people’s views on the history of the NBA. A great big man will always influence the game more than a great guard, defense may win championships, but some offensive forces just can’t be stopped, and most of all never count out what type of scheme someone is playing in,...

Michael Jordan on the 1992 Olympic Team vs. 2012

The greatest debate in sports this summer has been about would this year’s men’s Olympic basketball Team beat the 1992 Dream Team? Many players on both of the team gave their option’s but they really didn’t go in depth with their answer. Kobe Bryant started it by saying the 2012 Team could beat the Dream Team and then Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Magic...

You Can Finally Play As The 1992 Dream Team

The folks at 2K Sports set the Twitters ablaze this morning with the news that NBA 2K13 will finally give gamers the chance to play as the 1992 U.S. Olympics Men’s Basketball Team, or the Dream Team. I don’t even play video games and I’m tempted to buy it just so I can keep assigning players to guard Magic Johnson and see if they run away. Gotta make it realistic, 2K Sports...
