Photo Credit: NBA.com Despite Dwight Howard changing teams this season, fleeing LA for the Houston Rockets, some people believe that the Golden State Warriors signing of Andre Iguodala may have been the best of the off-season. However, it was reportedly an hour from never happening. Prior to his deal with the Dubs, Iguodala was very close to inking a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. The details via probasketballtalk.com and the San Francisco Chronicle: Iguodala wanted to be a Warrior. He reached out to Mark Jackson when the 76ers had coaching openings in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and he has researched the “life-after-basketball” opportunities that exist in Silicon Valley. To get here, he turned down a four-year, $52 million deal that Sacramento offered July 2 and then pulled, a five-year, $60 million front-loaded deal that Denver had on the table throughout the process, and a lucrative deal with Dallas that Iguodala almost signed an hour before the Warriors were able to create the necessary cap space to offer him four years and $48 million. This is yet another gut punch to the Dallas Mavericks and their fans, who have completely struck out the last two off-seasons. It seems fair to say at this point letting Tyson Chandler go to the New York Knicks, and conceding their ability to defend the 2011 championship was a huge mistake. Furthermore, it may be time to consider the Celtics method, and seeing what you may be able to get for Dirk Nowitzki on the open market. On the other end, Iguodala definitely ended up in a better situation in Golden State, and the Warriors have put themselves among the elites. As usual, it all depends on Steph Curry, and his troublesome ankles, along with Andrew Bogut’s health. If sturdy, the Warriors have a realistic shot to not only make the Finals, but become a threat for years to come.
