OPENING TIP Kyrie Irving is back, and man, thats just great. Dion Waiters is not, and man, that sort of stinks. After all, Waiters is the Cavs second-leading scorer, a developing rookie, a guy who scores 20 a game when the Cavs win. OK, thats only been four (out of 21) times, but still. The Cavs need Waiters, Waiters needs playing time, and the Lakers are in town. And guess who Waiters wouldve been matched up against? Yeah, that guy. Kobe Bryant. The star whos in his 17th season, has won five rings, and at 34, is having one of his best individual seasons ever. (As for the Lakers as a team, well, we know that story of early drama and untapped chemistry. But lets give a while. Sound good? Great.) Back to Waiters. Hes missed four games with a sprained ankle. Well, at least everyone thought it was a sprained ankle. Turns out it was a sprained ankle and a bruise to the ankle bone. That makes things, oh, just a bit more complicated. Or a lot more. I think Dions still a little ways away, Cavs coach Byron Scott said from practice Monday. That comment went somewhat unnoticed, considering the (justified) city-wide and NBA-wide euphoria over Irvings return from a broken finger -- which is taking place a week earlier than the team projected. Waiters, on the other hand, seems to be going the other way. His injury is a little more severe than originally thought. A bone bruise is no reason to sound the alarms, but its nothing to mess around with, either. On the bright side, Waiters is not in a walking boot. Hes not hobbling. He even ran some sprints (OK, jogs) alongside a trainer at practice. Hes just now starting to do some light running, Scott said. Then the coach discussed the seriousness regarding the latest information. If it was a regular ankle sprain, he probably wouldve been able to practice (Monday), Scott said. The bone bruise makes it a little more difficult. So its going to take a little more time. So Waiters will miss out on his first opportunity to learn from the NBAs reigning master at shooting guard. Sadly, moments like these are what rookies live for. But the Cavs would like to have Dion for as long as the Lakers have had Kobe. It's best not to put the kid in too early. Irving is back. Waiters can wait. Coach: Mike DAntoni. Cavs C Anderson Varejao; PF Tristan Thompson; SF Alonzo Gee; SG Daniel Gibson; PG Kyrie Irving. Coach: Byron Scott. NOTABLE Lakers starting power forward Pau Gasol is questionable with knee tendinitis. It seems unlikely that hell play tonight. Jamison spent two and a half seasons with the Cavs. He played in all but one game last season, averaging 17.2 points. This season, however, Jamison is averaging a career-low 8.0 points. Jamison, 36, has been in the league 15 seasons. The Lakers are his fifth team. Lakers forward Jordan Hill (back) is probable. The Lakers lead the all-time series, 59-41. Scott played 11 seasons and won three championships with the Lakers. His final season as a player came with the Lakers in 1996-97. Bryant was a rookie on that team. Bryant averaged an NBA-best 27.0 points in November. Jan. 29 marks the 33rd anniversary of the Cavs 154-153 home win over the Lakers in four overtimes, widely considered one of the NBAs greatest regular-season games of all time.

Life without Kyrie Irving has not been fun. It was hard. How hard? The Cleveland Cavaliers (4-17, 13th in the East) went 2-9 without him. Sure, the Cavaliers are 2-8 with him, so there’s no evidence of the team being worse without him. But if you watched the 11 games he missed, you know the truth. Topping L.A. was nice, but Kyrie’s “true test” is in Indiana

Kyrie Irving was ready. The self-proclaimed Cavaliers’ biggest cheerleader was ready to put down his pom poms and swap his suit for a wine and gold jersey. He knew that all of his begging and pleas would fall on the deaf ears of team physicians, keeping a long term, investment-like frame of mind when it came to clearing the reigning Rookie of the Year to resume full basketball...

In his first game back, Irving played the second-most minutes (38) of anyone on the...

Irving and Cavs deal Lakers another loss

Box Score: Cavaliers 81, Pacers 96

Unfortunately Kyrie Irving didn’t do so well on his test. CJ Miles came into this game picking up right where he left off. He scored 11 of the Cavaliers first 13 points and the Cavs bench played the best quarter of their season in the 2nd quarter. The Cavaliers were up 54-38 with about 4 minutes left in the first half. It looked like the Cavaliers would be cruising to another win...

Irving's return sparks Cavs past Lakers

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers ran into one of the all-time greats. Playing for the first time since Nov. 18, Irving had 28 points, six rebounds and a season-high 11 assists in the Cavs' exciting 100-94 victory...

Box Score: Lakers 94, Cavaliers 100

What a night for Cleveland sports. First, Kyrie Irving came back for the Cavaliers. Then, while the game was going on, the Indians made what appears to be a stellar trade. And then, just for good measure, the Cavaliers beat the Lakers. It was evident from the beginning just how much Irving was missed. Kyrie wasted no time in making his impact felt and the Cavaliers opened up a huge...

Cavaliers-Pacers Preview

The Cleveland Cavaliers are bringing a 14-game division losing streak into a matchup with a team they haven't beaten much of late. There is some hope for the Cavaliers since Kyrie Irving has returned heading into Wednesday night's road contest with the Indiana Pacers. No excuse for Cavs' lead-blowing ways

The Cavaliers were playing on the road one night after an emotional victory at home. But what happened Wednesday at Indiana was unacceptable. Period. The verdict: Pacers 96, Cavs 81. The sentence: Most likely the wrath of coach Byron Scott. The truth: Life in the NBA, with its constant stream of back-to-back games and lack of respect from the referees, can be brutal and downright...

Lakers-Cavaliers Preview

While the Los Angeles Lakers' offense has improved since Mike D'Antoni took over as coach, those strides seem to be coming at the cost of a defense which continues to struggle. The Lakers are still searching for answers as they begin a four-game road trip Tuesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who hope Kyrie Irving's return will help them snap a five-game skid...
