“Multiple sources tell Sporting News the Los Angeles Clippers are making a push to acquire center Kevin Garnett from the Boston Celtics. Team officials have been talking ahead of Sunday’s game in Boston. Questions remain about whether the Celtics are ready to make a major step in rebuilding the franchise. Garnett has a no-trade clause in his contract, and would have to agree to waive it in order to make a deal happen. The crux of an offer for Garnett, according to sources, would be based around second-year guard Eric Bledsoe and veteran wing Caron Butler. Celtics officials have made no decisions about the future, even with rookie power forward Jared Sullinger (back surgery) joining point guard Rajon Rondo (knee) last week in seeing their seasons end.” Rumors surrounding this deal are simply rumors, and there is no reason to believe that Danny Ainge and the Celtics’ Front Office is prepared to cut bait and plan for the future by moving Garnett. Bledsoe is a young, athletic point guard who could serve as a stop-gap until Rondo recovers from his ACL tear and Butler is yet another wing scorer that really would do nothing for this team in the short term. Therefore it seems like if Boston was going to part with the man who changed the face of their franchise and led the team to Banner 17 in 2007-08, they would need to get a little more back.   Not to mention that Garnett has to be sold on the move. As you may recall, K.G. was given some extra time at the end of last season to contemplate his retirement, but decided to sign a three-year deal with the Celtics on June 30th, 2012. He even released a statement to the Boston Herald that “he wasn’t going to leave Doc (Rivers) and those guys and play anywhere else.” Therefore, things would have to seem pretty bleak in Boston for Ainge to pitch Garnett on leaving the team so that they can rebuild. After four consecutive wins, including two against the Heat and Clippers (who have a combined record of 64-30), there is no reason to blow up this roster or assume that they can’t compete this season. Keep in mind that sources say the Clippers have interest in Garnett, rather than stating that Ainge ‘covets’ Bledsoe or Butler. This is just another example of posing and posturing as we approach the February 21st trade deadline, and the C’s will hold all their cards close to the chest while evaluating the team in the final weeks before that deadline.
