At 39-years-old, Steve Nash is the oldest player in the league this season. For that reason, along with the fact that he was plagued by injury last season, it makes sense to limit his minutes this year. Mike D’Antoni is planning on doing just that, and he may even sit the Canadian point guard on the second night of back-to-backs. The following transcript from Media Day is provided by Lakers.com: Q: On limiting Steve Nash’s minutes during the season: D’Antoni: We’ll talk about it. We’ll see how he feels. Obviously we have to do something there, whether it’s back to backs or whether it’s a little bit more limited per game, something when we get through camp, and see where he is physically, then we’ll make those decisions going forward. Gregg Popovich sat the 37-year-old Tim Duncan last season and this strategy appeared to pay off; Duncan played in, and started, a total of 69 regular season games where he averaged 17.8 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.7 blocks in 30.1 minutes per game. These numbers were similar in 21 playoff games, aside from the fact Duncan ended up playing about 5 minutes more per game, and the San Antonio Spurs ended up being just minutes away from winning an NBA title. The Lakers are fortunate enough to have two quality point guards to back-up Nash this season in Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar, so whenever Nash feels like he needs a night off, those guys should be able to step up and keep the Canadian rested for the most important part of the year: the playoffs. .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } @media(min-width: 500px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } } @media(min-width: 800px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 336px; height: 280px; } }
