The Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves met for the first time in the 2013-14 season on Friday night at Pepsi Center. The Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves met for the first time in the 2013-14 NBA season. Thus far, the Timberwolves are much improved at 6-3 on the year while the Nuggets have struggled to a 3-4 record. Despite the career game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, Brian Shaw went with the same starters and brought Timofey Mozgov off the bench. Denver quickly jumped out to a quick start on the shoulders of JJ Hickson‘s 10 points and 6 rebounds along with Ty Lawson‘s 8 points, 7 assists and 3 rebounds. The first quarter was a bit of a point guard duel between Lawson and Ricky Rubio as he chipped in 5 assists for the T’Wolves. The Nuggets led by as many as 12 in the first quarter and were up 35-26 at the quarter break. The Nuggets play looked crisp in the first quarter and continued that trend into the second quarter as they extended their lead to 14 points. Minnesota is the highest scoring team in the NBA for a reason. They came charging back on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to 4 at 42-38 with 7:41 to go in the second. Minnesota closed the half on a 22-14 run from that point. Shaw made multiple substitutions to try to stop the bleeding but it was too late and the Nuggets were down 60-56. Kenneth Faried continued his hot streak since moving back into the starting lineup with 10 points and 5 rebounds in the first half. One has to wonder if the recent trade rumors have added a bit of motivation to Faried’s game. It remains to be seen whether that motivation is to prove that the Nuggets should keep him or to prove his value to the rest of the league. Denver started the second half with a 9-2 run in the first 4 minutes of the third quarter. The Timberwolves lone points in that stretch came from ex-Nugget, Corey Brewer. Over the next two minutes, Minnesota went on a 6-2 run of their own making it a one point game at 69-68. Mozgov was inserted into the game at that point and had 6 points in the quarter to keep Denver ahead 86-81 going into the final period. After leading by 13 for a good stretch of the fourth quarter, Minnesota cut into the Nuggets lead behind Brewer and Kevin Martin‘s key baskets. Denver led by 9 with 1:16 to go and was only up by two with 18.9 seconds to go. Wilson Chandler missed his second free throw and Andre Miller had a key offensive rebound to keep the game in Denver’s hands and made one of his free throws. Faried ended the game with a block on Martin followed by a block on Love to extend the Nuggets winning streak to 3 in a row. Denver wins 117-113 after an exciting last few minutes of play.   Notes: The Nuggets had 7 players in double figure scoring in this game and 11 players played 13 minutes or more Denver has now won 46 of last 47 home games when scoring 100 points or more Despite the big night against the Lakers, Mozgov did not start but finished with 10 points, 5 boards and 1 block in 17 minutes of play Nate Robinson continues to struggle for Denver with 6 points on 3-10 shooting Lawson was quiet after a big first quarter, finishing with 14 points, 10 assists and 5 rebounds, which means he had 6 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds in quarters 2 through 4 Love stuffed the stat sheet – 28 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Love could be a possible MVP candidate this season and may be a challenger for the scoring title How does the Oklahoma City Thunder let a scorer like Martin (27 points) go – especially to a division rival? Miller is now 6-8 on 3-pointers this season, he is 21.3% for his career The Nuggets have now won 4 out of last 5 after starting out 0-3 Denver breaks 110 for the second time this season and gets the fans tacos Rubio was held scoreless in this game but contributed 12 assists, 8 rebounds and 3 steals With JaVale McGee out indefinitely, Hickson and Faried play well together, each posted a double-double – combined for 28 points and 21 rebounds Chandler has been fantastic off the bench for Denver and should find his way into the starting lineup in no time – 19 points in 22 minutes Denver hit some season high milestones – points (117), points in a half (61), points in 4th quarter (31), points in the paint (64) and tied assists (28) This Nuggets team lets opponents back into games way too easily and it will end up costing them games this season Next up, the Nuggets travel to play the Houston Rockets Saturday night at the Toyota Center at 6pm (MST) Follow Peter Sherwill on Twitter @PeterSherwill or add him to your network on Google. photo by: Keith Allison The post Denver Nuggets Beat Minnesota Timberwolves 117-113 appeared first on Hardwood Gold Rush.
