When anyone brings up the name Mark Cuban, one of the first things that is undoubtedly going to be said is something about the passion he has for his team, followed by how hands-on he is for an owner. Both of those attributes make this story even more surprising: Cuban missed the free agent meeting with Deron Williams, and it didn’t go unnoticed by the point guard.

According to Williams via The New York Times, there were a lot of questions that he had at his free agent meeting that went unanswered because of Cuban’s absence:

“A lot of the questions that me and my agent had for them really didn’t get answered that day — you know, pertaining to the future. And I think if he was there, he would have been able to answer those questions a little bit better. Maybe would have helped me.”

Williams went on to say that the answers he received from Dallas’ two main representatives at the meeting, Donnie Nelson and coach Rick Carlisle. was to “trust their track record.” While Williams agreed with their statement, it just wasn’t good enough for him:

“I can honor that, because they do have a good track record. But it’s not enough for me to switch organizations, especially when Billy was updating me daily,”

For those of you who don’t know, “Billy” is Nets GM Billy King. Ultimately, when asked if Cuban’s presence at the meeting would’ve made a difference, Williams simply said “of course.”

Cuban addressed this issue back in August, citing prior commitments that made it impossible to attend the meeting, but said he was texting back and forth with Williams about their future:

In regards to not attending the final face-to-face July meeting with Williams, Cuban said: “Obviously, I had a conflict, but I was texting him. I was texting him. We were going back and forth quite a bit.”

Could Cuban have made a difference had he attended the meeting?

“Maybe,” he responded. “You know, because I always think I can close the sale.”

Cuban went on to say “I think we’re in better position now then we would’ve been if we’d gotten him.”

This story really shocks me. I find it hard to wrap my head around a guy like Cuban not being able to shuffle some things in order to attend this meeting.

As a Net fan, if there is one thing I have learned about Deron, it’s that he is a different type of dude. He is not your prototypical superstar, and he can be a little sensitive. Something like not being present for your biggest pitch to get D-Will on your team is the type of thing that would sway his decision. If Cuban really did his homework on Deron, that should be something that he knows about the point guard.

Cuban also says that his team is better off without Williams, which seems ridiculous to even entertain. If that were the truth, why did you go after him so hard? I guess we will find out soon enough who got the better end of the deal, as basketball season rapidly approaches.
