Dirk Nowitzki is a 7-foot-tall German who excels at playing basketball for the Dallas Mavericks, so it’s of little surprise that given the opportunity to step in the batting cage and take some hacks during BP, he might not look as smooth as he does when taking one of his patented fall away jump shots. Hey, it’s nice to see that not all athletes are adept at mastering every sport they try their hand at.

All gangliness and awkward swings aside, credit goes to Nowitzki for trying something that he knows he’s not particularly skilled at doing and will probably embarrass himself for trying and giving it a go anyway. He is pretty terrible though, and that swing is so bad that even when he does make contact the ball never really goes anywhere. You know it’s bad when your best hit is one that looks as if it made the outfield grass behind second base after four hops and a helpful gust of wind.

He does get swagger points for the batting gloves and backwards hat. You can’t teach that.

Come for the free swinging German, stay for the inordinate amount of foul balls…

Yeah, not so good. But hey, from what I hear Germans aren’t especially talented when it comes to baseball. They’re more suited for soccer, basketball, and Hasselhoff admiring.
