BOSTON — The last nine months were interesting for JaJuan Johnson, to say the least. From first-round pick by the Celtics to bench jockey to trade chip and, most recently, top pick in the NBADL draft, the 23-year-old Purdue product has so far not panned out as it was hoped when Boston took him with the 27th pick in the 2011 NBA draft. Before Johnson plays a single game with his new team, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, his former coach offered a quick opinion on Johnson’s uncertain NBA prospects. “I know he has the talent, I’ll put it that way,” Doc Rivers said. “I told him that this summer. He’s going to either have to pull it out of himself or he’ll be there [in the D-League], but I do believe that he has NBA talent. I hope he makes it.” Another former Celtics rookie, meanwhile, has flourished in a new environment. E’Twaun Moore was waived by the Houston Rockets shortly after he arrived as part of the Courtney Lee trade, and was signed by the Orlando Magic in early September. In three ga...

Doc Rivers: “Jeff Green is hard on me”

Doc Rivers has never seemed like the kind of coach who is afraid to speak his mind. From candid between-quarter interviews (the same interviews that Greg Popovich uses to become an unholy terror to sideline reporters) to on-court interaction, Doc seems to be the kind of person who lets you know where you stand. Sounds like the kind of person you’d want to have coaching an underachieving...

Doc Rivers calls out Jeff Green

WEEI, D&C Jeff's not gonna ever show you intensity, even though he may have it, if you know what I'm saying. He's a poker-face player. You're just not going to get that out of him. What you want to get out of him is great play. And he has to play better, there's no doubt about that. This coming after Doc was yelling at Green during practice and explained to...

Video: Paul Pierce gets social, does Doc Rivers impression

I just received a tweet from Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce. The Truth is showing off his social media profiles AND giving his best impression of coach Doc Rivers! Great stuff!

The extended preseason of the Boston Celtics

Doc Rivers running Celtics practice the other day Today is the fourth game of the season for the Boston Celtics. It was a highly anticipated as the green added pieces to increase their skill and depth just one year removed from being one game away from the NBA Finals. Four games in and things have been “eh”for the Boston Celtics. On opening night in South Beach, the Celtics were...

Celtics Locker Room Report: Sullinger Starts Again and Doc on the Lack of Good Big Men in the NBA

Jared Sullinger starts again for the Celtics as they face the Wiards for the second straight game. Doc Rivers was asked before the game why Sullinger was starting again, which he met with a simple answer. “We’re playing the same team!” Rivers joked. “I do like Jared in the lineup. I just think he just [...]

Doc Rivers Went to See ‘Argo’ Instead of Watching Election Results, Left Before Seeing End of Movie

BOSTON — As far as president elections go, Tuesday was rather anticlimactic. President Barack Obama was re-elected by a 97-vote margin in the electoral college and most major networks declared Obama the winner by around 11:30 p.m. Even that was too nerve-wracking for Celtics coach Doc Rivers. The unabashed Obama supporter had to flee to a dark movie theater to watch Argo in order...

Doc Rivers Draws Hard Line Against Overplaying Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce In Early Season Despite Celtics’ Struggles

WALTHAM, Mass. — With every cutter who slips past an unwitting Boston defender, the personnel changes made by the Celtics during the offseason become more glaring. Dramatic roster turnover from one year to the next is not unique to the Celtics, but three games into the season this team has been hardly the efficient machine it was near the end of last season. Doc Rivers is not surprised...

Wrap-Up - Chris Wilcox Saved the Game

Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce all gave credit to Chris Wilcox for helping to turn the game around last night, which is amazing since he played less than 4 minutes. But he came into the game in the second period and brought energy and effort that the Celtics were missing at that point and it inspired his teammates to do the same. Both Jeff Green and Chris Wilcox underwent...

76ers-Celtics Preview

All of the Boston Celtics' pieces are present. For coach Doc Rivers, it's just a matter of fitting them together. In a rematch of last season's Eastern Conference semifinals, the revamped Celtics will try to again fine-tune their chemistry on Friday as they host the Philadelphia 76ers, a team relying on stingy defense without its marquee addition. After starting the...

Rajon Rondo's quest for leadership

I liken Rondo to a good martini that is shaken not stirred, so as not to bruise its delicate chemistry. The past few years have seen Boston continually shuffle his supporting cast. It began with the loss of Perk.  It took Rondo quite awhile to get himself out of that funk in. This year it was the loss of his former shooting guard, his bail-out brother. A sure shot. Now he finds...
