Good big men are a luxury in the NBA.  And to afford a luxury, you have to pay a premium.  I understand that.  But Nene, Marc Gasol and Tyson Chandler have got to be kidding with their initial asking prices.  According to sources, Nene, Chandler and Gasol all set their early asking prices in the neighborhood of maximum-contract territory, starting at $14.8 million for Gasol, $17.7 annually for Nene, and $20.7 million for Chandler. There is plenty of crossover in their respective lists of salary-cap-friendly suitors, with the Nets, Rockets and Warriors appearing to be the hungriest shoppers, and the Pacers and Trail Blazers strolling the big man aisles as well. Let's start this by going to the gold standard, Dwight Howard.  He's making $17.8 million this season.  Andrew Bynum, who I consider to be the second best center in the league, is making $15.1 million.  And while I recognize that each year players will make more and more and it's hard to compare things like this,...

One more time, report says Marc Gasol’s not leaving Memphis. Seriously. No kidding. For real.

ESPN.com reports that there’s a high amount of skepticism around the league regarding Marc Gasol‘s availability in restricted free agency outside of Memphis. In short, the Grizzlies have every intention of matching any offer for the young stud center. Gasol is not the biggest name on the Grizzlies, with Zach Randolph, Rudy Gay, Mike Conley,…

Toronto Raptors In Market For Chandler, Gasol, Nene

Toronto Raptors President and General Manager Bryan Colangelo is apparently a player in the Tyson Chandler, Marc Gasol, and Nene sweepstakes at the moment. He doesn't want to eventually sign all three of them though, just one. He is also reportedly serious in the fact that he thinks he might actually be able to lure one of these guys to Toronto too, and that most people won&...

"Definitely keep an eye on" OJ Mayo

This tweet from CSNNE's A. Sherrod Blakely caught my attention this morning. Sherrod was doing one of his random respond-to-every-tweet binges and turning people away from the usual suggestions of Nene and Dwight Howard and other unrealistic things. But OJ Mayo is an interesting case. In this third year, at age 23, his scoring dropped by six points a game last year. Other than...

NBA Free Agency: Nene, Marc Gasol, Tyson Chandler lead list of available centers

The NBA’s signing period begins on Dec. 9. Until then teams will be frantically courting players to fill holes on their rosters ahead of the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season. With an expected $58 million salary cap forthcoming in the new collective bargaining agreement and a relatively unspectacular class of free agents from which to choose, NBA teams will spend the next week trying...

Report: Heat in the lead for Battier

Shane Battier is the type of player you would expect to take a discount to ring chase. He’s been a glue guy in Houston, sticking with them through injuries and curious decisions. He was the chemistry guy in Memphis, helping the younger players get better and making the three that gave the franchise its first…

Memphis Grizzlies move quickly on assistants Thornton, Pierce

Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said earlier this week that there was no timetable for hiring two assistant coaches. But he's wasted little time since the lockout ended.

Miami Appears To Be Favorite For Battier

Arron is one popular Afflalo

It’s been a familiar refrain from a handful of front-office types during the first few days of the NBA’s gradual return to offseason normalcy: Denver’s Arron Afflalo is a popular choice when you ask execs to pinpoint the most attractive free agent outside of the big men. Afflalo’s Denver teammate Nene, Dallas Mavericks center Tyson Chandler, New Orleans Hornets forward David...
