ATLANTA -- Hawks general manager Danny Ferry addressed his team's needs at center and point guard with the 17th and 18th picks of the NBA draft on Thursday night. Atlanta chose point guard Dennis Schroeder of Germany at No. 17, but per NBA rules, Ferry was not allowed to immediately discuss details of a trade with Dallas to acquire the rights to center Lucas Nogueira of Brazil at No. 16. The proposed trade, which included sending the Hawks' 18th pick to the Mavericks, was still awaiting league approval when Ferry met with reporters during the latter part of the first round. Ferry used the No. 18 pick on Miami point guard Shane Larkin, and if the deal was approved, Atlanta would send him to Dallas for point guard Jared Cunningham. The Hawks also was supposed to acquire a third second-round pick, giving them the Nos. 44, 47 and 50 spots. Cunningham, the No. 24 overall draft pick last year, played in just eight games last year for Dallas and spent most of last season with the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League, averaging 15.3 points and 3.0 assists in 15 games. The Hawks have yet to indicate if they will try to re-sign Jeff Teague, the incumbent starting point guard who's a restricted free agent. But Ferry seemed excited about the potential of Schroeder. "I love that he is tenacious," Ferry said. "He can shoot the basketball at a good level, he can get in the lane and make plays for other people. Defensively, he can put great pressure on the ball." Atlanta was potentially considering a center or a shooting guard or forward with its first pick before selecting the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Schroeder, who impressed Ferry at the Nike Hoops Summit game, held in Portland, Ore., two months ago. "I think the Hoops summit this year was a good example of playing at a high level in a very high level game," Ferry said. "I think the Hoops Summit game was excellent opportunity to see what he was able to do." The Hawks, a possible longshot candidate to sign Atlanta native and Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard as an unrestricted free agent, likely want to pair the 7-foot Nogueira so Al Horford can move to power forward.
