Said the man who joins Bill Russell and Michael Jordan as the third in history to win consecutive regular season and NBA Finals MVP awards, and it’s impossible to argue with him. If only we could all escape the soul sucking vacuum of the Dan Gilberts of the world as effectively as LeBron has. At least the spark of hope on this front delivered by the kid from Akron is as much as anyone could ask for from a basketball game in 2013. Which admittedly might not be saying much, and certainly isn’t to say that Heat owner Micky Arison is a saint. But in choosing the lesser of two evils, give us the one who at least has the shame to come off in public like he only emerges from a castle full of Oxycontin and prostitutes when his NBA team is celebrating championships. Pleasure boat captains over sloganeering loan sharks and ballot buying casino monopolists, a step in the right direction that’s only validated by the latest Heat title, the result of one of the most compelling championship competitions in any sport in recent memory, and one of the few victories that can be legimately viewed as a strike for labor against capital in 2013.  Which isn’t to say we shouldn’t expect more from LeBron, too, but at least for now he can say he’s busy establishing himself as the best basketball player who’s ever lived. So once again, if you’re from Northeast Ohio and can’t take some pleasure in the fact that this greatness came from your own backyard, you should at least be able to understand that it’s a perfectly fine thing that many people in your backyard can and will. A backyard that grew at least one kid from the inner city who got somewhere decent where he’s not supposed to be. Tweet
