Michael Jordan is widely considered by many to be the greatest all-around player in NBA history. If you asked most people to come up with the best starting five of all-time, most of them would build the lineup around Jordan. Karl Malone is not most people. • I guess Karl is still upset about Jordan and the Bulls beating them. Karl's choices have taken away all of his credibility...however, I would love to pick a team to play against that team he named.
  • I wouldn't have "his Heirness" in my TOP 5 either. I don't even consider Jordan the greatest of all time. My starting 5 would be the following: @ Center...Bill Russell. Why? If you have to ask you don't know Bill! @ Forward...Larry Bird @ Forward...Dr. J @ Guard...Pistol Pete Maravich @ Guard...Magic Johnson . Greatest player Greatest Clutch Player .....Larry Bird.. & for all you OMG'ers out there... @ one point Jordan lost 16 in a row #33. Bird consistingly outscored & outplayed Jordan in Head To Head competition. No contest. Don't believe me....go look at the film!
  • YES!!! ABOUT TIME I HEARD A REAL FAN OF OUR SPORT TALK "REAL TALK" LARRY BIRD MADE EVERYBODY AROUND HIM BETTER!! NOT TO MENTION THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS (COUNT EM!!)& MVP AWARDS...THE STUFF HE DID ON THAT COURT WAS AMAZING!!! YA GOTTA LUV PISTOL PETE TOO & MAGIC, RUSSELL, & DR. J WOULDA BEEN MY PICKS! GOOD CALL!! PS: "BORN & RAISED IN BOSTON MASS! **617** ALL DAY!"
  • I am not surprised by Karl's pick, which explains why he has never won a championship. He does not know how to assemble a great team. Look at his last choice for a team, he went to the Lakers when they had a tremendous amount of talent and he still could not win a championship.

On a side note, I saw this site and could not believe it existed. It’s called Coupon Tyrone and the address is: www.CouponTyrone.com . My wife loaded up on coupons from this site. It’s funny but definitely a cool site that saves you money.
  • Listen!!!!Where is larry Bird? To not take Michael Jordan indicates u don't like him, or you have no clue in respect to the best players. Take Michael Jordan and put him at 27 years old and bring any player in the world at any time or level and that player will get spanked by Jordan including even Labron. Michael was the best basketball player to ever play the game period!!!!!
  • Oscar Robertson was the greatest point guard in the history of the game. He averaged a triple double in an era that 50% of the guards are in the Hall of fame. Wilt Chamberlin was the greatest center of all time.Again in an era that had less than 20 teams and some of the greatest centers of all time. Wilt also won the assist title. How is Elgin Baylor or Dr. J not even in the small forward conversation?
  • Yo ! I put Larry Bird on my team....but..for you to say @ 27years of age MJ would "spank" anybody is just off the hook lunacy! I'll give you my short list of guys that would shut Jordan down. Let's not forget a healthy David Thompson ! He could jump out of his sneakers, shoot, play D. Larry Bird, the name says it all. Jordan had NO answer for Larry! Bird would out hustle, shoot over him, take Jordan to the hoop, dunk on him, basically #33 had his way with #23 ! Domenicke Wilkens was the man in his day! I know MJ would have his hands full with ther human highlight film! Finally, I submit to you the man who had #23 B4 Jordan put his stamp on it. Pistol Pete Maravich! The all time college division 1 scoring champ B4 there was a 3pt line. The pistol would light up Michael in a game of pivots! Besides, WHO gave Jordan the title anyway? Is it the rings, a good argument, but, we are talking talent! Speaking of Talent...#20...Starting for the Phila 76er's, & who owns a ring or two...Doug Collins! A/K/A White Lighting! He had the shot, the moves, played defense..the whole package! Doug vs Mike....both in their prime...I pay to see it. Peace !
  • Really Karl!!!
What about Magic, love stockton but Magic was a winner. Note to yourself you picked guys who were great but did not dominate at the championship level (wilt, oscar, stocks and lebron).
Karl ponder this since you have a "man crush"(wtf) on lebron:
Utah Jazz replaces you at forward with Lebron but all other player remain the same. Do you win championships or how many championships do you win? Would you be a consistent winner in the west? I think Lebron could not carry your jock on your team let alone be an all time great!! Also the west at that time would eat him alive at that (4)position. Lebron is good but he is no power forward like you, Tim Duncan, KG, Chris webber, mcdyess, Kemp, Worthy - do I need to continue...
  • That would be a hell of a team Karl, but not the best. If I were to create a team made up of players in their prime that I think no other possible team could beat, it would have to be-

[PG] Magic Johnson [SG] Michael Jordan [SF] LeBron James [PF] Tim Duncan [C] Shaquille O'neal.

My Bench- [PG2] Oscar Robertson [SG2] Kobe Bryant [SF2] Larry Bird [PF2] Karl Malone [C2] Kareem Abdul-Jabbar... and to complete the 12-man roster, I'll go with... Julius Erving & Tracy McGrady (prime season avg 32-7-6).
  • Hmmmmm since he went that way. I am surprised he didn't include himself so that it would have been even more absurd.
  • I dont know what type of basketball some of you have been watching but Jordan played when they let you hand check and be much more physical than they play today and also how could you not mention Jerry west as one of the top clutch players to play. Jordan was the best ever period! Karl is mad because Jordan took away any chance of him getting a championship and if he had not retired for those three years, you could of added at least two more championships to his legacy. My all time starting five would be Jordan,Bird,Magic,Mr Russell and Labron and that's also because of the basketball IQ's you have there, along with the toughness and winning attitudes and intelligence to play team basketball to their strenghts. I would like to hear of a team that could challenge this group in their prime. I have watched each one of them front court during their prime. I hate to leave Jerry West off of this team, but would take him in a heart beat as a substitute in place of any of these players except Jordan and Russell.
  • Jabbar 5 titles,Duncan 3 titles,Kobe 5 titles, Jordan 6 titles, Magic 5 titles. Love Russell, my dad played on the same high school team in Oakland.Russell was great in his day, this is a new era! My starting 5 looks pretty impressive, hard to leave off James...needs more titles.
  • Jabbar has 6 rings and more mvps than anyone
  • Karl Malone just confirmed that he has an axe to grind. The tougher question is who comprises team #2. The obvious best team #1 would be: pg-magic johnson; sg-jordan;f1-larry bird; f2-lebron james; and c-bill russell.
  • What is everyone's obsession with Larry Bird.......LISTEN you dumbasses-- PG- Magic Johnson, there's no argument....SG- Michael Jordan, there's no argument....SF- LeBron James, there's no argument....PF- Tim Duncan, there's no argument....C- Bill Russell, there's no argument..........6th man- Kobe Bryant
  • K. Malone obviously does not know much about fielding a basketball team.

    1) Russell, F
    2) Bird, F
    3) Magic, G
    4) Jordan, G
    5) Kareem, C

    Bench
    6) Lebron, F
    7) Dr. J
    8) Moses Malone
    9) J Worthy
    10) K Durant
    11) Oscar Robertson

This team will FAST BREAK the ball NONSTOP.
When we are running, Kareem is on the Bench and Lebron is F (or Dr. J, Worthy, Durant - whoever is NOT TIRED) and Russell goes to center.

When we cannot run on the opposing team, Kareem and Oscar are in.

When we need to DOMINATE the boards to win, Malone and Russell take care of that problem.

Pick your team. You don't have a chance again this squad.
  • Hard to leave off Connie Hawkins on anyone's team. For me, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Connie Hawkins, and Dr. J. I think I'd win a lot more games with this team than I'd lose.
  • Robertson-PG
    Jordan-G
    Wilt-C
    LeBron-F
    Russell-F

Who could beat this combination? I'm old enough to remember the NBA back when it was worth watching for more than the last 10 minutes of the game. I've seen all the greats play since 1965.

    BENCH
    Bird, F
    Magic, G
    Kareem, C
    Dr. J, G
    Moses Malone, F
    J Worthy, F
    K Durant, G
    Gervin, G
    Frazier
  • I left Wilt off my team because I want to watch Wilt and Russell matched up again. I want to see Wilt handle Russell AND Kareem.
    Not gonna happen.
  • maybe he was going on the premise that the referees for his games would require the players to play by the rules. therefore Jordan would not qualify since he never played a professional game by any rules other than the "Jordan" rules. of course this would also disqualify LeBron so I don't know where Malone's mind was. (for those that do not know the Jordan rules are those that allow select players to do basically whatever they want while others get called for "being fouled" - it is still in use today but started with Jordan)
