PLAYERS: LeBron James
TEAMS: Miami Heat
Following in the footsteps of the greatest player to ever suit up for your team is a tough outing. Following in the footsteps of the greatest player to ever suit up for your team that left in dramatic fashion and left the entire city devastated is about as rough as it gets. Throughout Kyrie Irving’s career, he has been followed by the collateral damage of Lebron James abandoning his hometown of Cleveland and taking his talents to South Beach. He has not only been expected to escape the shadow of Lebron James with his play, he has been followed by doubts and questions about whether or not he would stay with Cleveland when the time to choose came. He has routinely said he does not plan on leaving Cleveland, though adding the words “right now” has led to skeptics believing he is leaving the possibility open intentionally. In his most recent answer, however, he put the questions about his commitment to Cleveland long term to bed. During a community appearance, Kyrie was answering questions when an innocent looking kid came up to deliver a bomb shell: “Are you going to leave us like Lebron left us?” “It’s a great question,” was Irving’s response. “Um, no, I won’t leave. I’m not leaving.” The crowd erupted in resounding cheers, and the city of Cleveland may have finally learned to trust again.
