Marcus Camby has signed to play for the Houston Rockets next year, according to Mark Berman of KRIV Fox 26 and will be paid the veteran’s minimum of $1.4 million. Camby had passed a physical conducted by the Rockets’ team doctors on Thursday, according to Berman, but had met with the Chicago Bulls on Friday, according to Chris Haynes of CSN Northwest. Camby’s agent, Rick Kaplan, told Berman via text that Camby is “excited” to return to the Rockets: “He believes he can add veteran leadership to a potent young core that can compete for the NBA title. It is a great opportunity for him and huge plus for  the Rockets.” Associated Press Averaging only 1.8 ppg and 3.3 rpg with the New York Knicks last season, Camby was plagued with injuries through 2012-13. Camby reportedly was healthy during the playoffs but was used only briefly during postseason play. He was traded to the Toronto Raptors as part of a deal for Andrea Bargnani. However, Camby wanted to play for a “contending team“, so the Raptors agreed to buy out Camby’s $7.5 million contract. Prior to joining the Knicks last season, however, Camby played in 19 games for the Rockets and averaged 7.1 ppg and 9.3 rpg. He had four double-doubles for the Rockets in 2011-12 with a high of 14 points and 18 rebounds against the Phoenix Suns on Apr. 13, 2012. Before that, Camby played in 40 games for the Portland Trail Blazers in 2011-12 and had three double-doubles. He also had three games where he snagged 20 or more rebounds for the Trail Blazers. The 22 rebounds he grabbed in a Trail Blazers-Memphis Grizzlies game on Jan. 24, 2012 were a 2011-12 season high for Camby. Camby will be joining Dwight Howard and Omer Asik on the Rockets roster. While he is thought to play behind Howard and Asik, he also has experience playing alongside another center. Camby was a starter along with center Chris Kaman during Camby’s tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers. If Camby is able to perform for the Rockets in 2013-14 as he did in 2011-12, the Rockets have a strong chance of becoming a “contending team” for the NBA title that Camby sought to join when he asked to be released from the Toronto Raptors.
