The Orlando Magic have made it pretty clear that they would love to keep Dwight Howard beyond this season – why wouldn’t they? – and that they are willing to play this season out in hopes that Howard will re-sign with them.

But when it comes to talking a trade involving Dwight Howard, which Orlando does reluctantly, they would like to open up negotiations with the Chicago Bulls.

If only Dwight were interested.

Could Orlando Work Out Trade With Chicago For Dwight Howard?

According to Ken Berger of CBS Sports, the trade talks between the Magic and Bulls can barely get off the ground because Howard is unwilling to pledge a long-term commitment to Chicago. This makes sense, of course. Though Howard could help power the Bulls to a title this year, Chicago would have to give up a lot to get a player that may only be a one-year rental, championship or not.

Orlando’s willingness to talk trade with Chicago comes about because of their disappointment at the packages being offered by the other suitors that are on Howard’s preferred trade list. Here is what Berger reports as the foundation of a deal that both parties would like if only Howard would pledge a commitment to Chicago:

But the team that can make the strongest case for Orlando to depart from its risky strategy of holding onto Howard are the Bulls, who could offer 7-footer Omer Asik, Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu, sources said. The Bulls also could offer a valuable first-round pick from Charlotte — top-14 protected in this year’s draft but but unprotected by 2016.

Seems solid on both sides right? Unfortunately, the teams can’t even really approach it seriously because of Howard’s reluctance to commit to Chicago, which very well may stem from Adidas not wanting to have Howard and Derrick Rose in the same market.

Yes, sports trades in 2012 are dictated, in part, by shoe companies. (Actually, this has probably happened more than we know for a while now…)

Alas, the Dwight Howard trade speculation swirls on and on, with the NBA’s trade deadline quickly approaching. Will he go? Will he stay? Who knows. But this particular deal, as great as it appears on both sides, likely will not happen.
