It’s already been an exciting sports day in Chicago with the Bears trading for Brandon Marshall. Could it get even more exciting with eventual news of a basketball trade that could bring Pau Gasol to the to Windy City?

Mark Stein of ESPN just tweeted “Bulls exploring avenues to try to trade for Lakers’ Pau Gasol, sources close to situation say. Story going up now at ESPN online.”


Pau Gasol may need to bust out his turtlenecks if he does indeed get traded from warm L.A. to Chicago.

Might Lakers Send Pau Gasol To The Bulls?

And here is the story by Stein on the potential Lakers-Bulls deal for Gasol. Excerpt:

Sources say that the Lakers, however, have limited interest in the players Chicago would be offering, starting with Bulls forward Carlos Boozer.

So the Bulls would have to recruit at least one more team to the discussions to have any shot at Gasol, sources said, with the Lakers known to be insistent on getting back at least one certifiable star if they consent to the trade the Spaniard.

As Stein explains, the Bulls have been trying to target Dwight Howard, but Howard famously and curiously does not want to team up with Derrick Rose, likely because of shoe company string pulling in the background.

Gasol obviously is not Dwight Howard, not in talent nor in age, but he remains one of the most skilled big men in the league, is a proven champion, and certainly could prove to be a more valuable piece for an immediate title run than Boozer. But can the Bulls find another team to get involved? L.A. won’t just give Gasol away, and with good reason. Chicago needs to find another team willing to include a “certifiable star” to get the deal done. (That’s gotta make Carlos Boozer feel real special, huh?)

If Chicago can pull this deal off, it would be huge. You have to take your shot at championships when you have it, and despite the looming presence of Miami, Chicago has many of the pieces necessary to win it all. Gasol also has proven that he’s quite happy playing second-fiddle to an alpha male star, helping Kobe Bryant win two titles. He would be asked to play the same role with Derrick Rose.

What do you think? Obviously we’d have to see what the Bulls would ultimately be forced to give up, but should targeting Gasol be their priority now with Dwight Howard unlikely to land in Chicago (and probably unlikely to be dealt at all)?
