The Brooklyn Nets have formally expressed interest in acquiring Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce from the Boston Celtics. The possible package from New Jersey would include Kris Humphries, Gerald Wallace, Tomike Shenglia, and three first-round picks according to Yahoo! Sports. Under his current contract, Kevin Garnett would have to waive his no-trade clause from the Celtics before he could be traded to any team. Paul Pierce has been rumored to be moving, bought out, and in trade talks since former Celtics head coach Doc Rivers expressed interest in coaching the Los Angeles Clippers. Garnett will be going into his 19th season,  and may only have a year or two left. Pierce will be heading into his 16th season. Honestly, I don’t really see this benefiting the Nets in the long run. The pieces they are giving up are not something they are going to have nightmares over. The last time I checked, the Nets were no where near being considered an elite team in the Eastern Conference. The only attractive thing about the trade is Kris Humphries’ expiring $12 million contract. If Boston wanted to take on that contract, the Celtics would be able to clear some cap room and prepare themselves for an impressive crop of 2014 free agents. Where is the return on the investment of Garnett and Pierce? They are not going to wheel the Nets to an NBA title, NBA Finals, or even an Eastern Conference final in front of Indiana, New York, Chicago, or the 2-time defending champion Heat. The Celtics just lost their head coach, and they look to lose all three pieces of their “Big Three” that lead them to the 2008 NBA title. Kevin Garnett seems to be content to retire unless he accepts a trade. Paul Pierce seems like he wants to play, but it probably won’t be with the team he’s been with for the last 15 seasons. The problem for both of these players is their contracts, and their age. I don’t believe Garnett nor Pierce are thinking about the proverbial rocking chair, but how many NBA teams are going to take them on? The line doesn’t appear to be too long. The Celtics are left with players that Brooklyn doesn’t want, and Rajon Rondo to lead them? Yikes. Rondo is a great player, but not a great people person from what I’ve seen. Just ask Ray Allen or Doc Rivers about that one. If Celtics GM Danny Ainge is looking to bomb next season and get in the lottery for next year’s draft, he may be on his way if this deal goes through. (Update: Keith Bogans could become a piece of the trade that would include Pierce, Garnett, and Jason Terry to the Nets)
