Last night we got to witness the newcomers to the New Orleans Hornets make their first start against the Memphis Grizzlies in the final preseason game.  Eric Gordon, Al-Farouq Amino, and Chris Kaman all made their debut in a Hornets uniform last night.  Gordon and Kaman did not disappoint scoring 17 and 18 points respectively to lead the way to a 95-80 preseason victory.  Aminu wasn’t great, but he ended up chipping in 6 points during his 18 minutes on the court.  There is still aspects of his game that needs worked on, but plenty of potential.  The way they have played in the two preseason games is very encouraging for the team heading into the regular season.

Another player that really stuck out last night was sophomore forward Quincy Pondexter, who dropped in 14 points and pulling down a very solid 12 rebounds to lead the team.  Jarrett Jack, who exploded in the first game was less effective scoring only 5 points but did dish out a team high 8 assists on the night.  Jason Smith is another player that has been extremely impressive this offseason.  He ended up chipping in 12 points and was a lot more active defensively, a part of his game that was fairly weak last season.  Smith should be a much better player off the bench this upcoming season, with his size and range.  Carl Landry added 8 points, Marco Belinelli and Trey Johnson both put in 4 points, Jerome Dyson pitched in 5, and finally Carldell Johnson had 2 points.  Playing but not scoring was forward Lance Thomas.  Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza were both granted the night off and did not play.

So with that game, the two game preseason is officially over and the NBA season is set to get underway this weekend!  The Hornets tip off Monday night traveling to Phoenix to take on the Suns.  More on that game as well as a season preview to come shortly, first there has been a new addition to the Hornets recently.  Mexican center/forward Gustavo Ayon has reportedly agreed to leave his team in Spain to join the New Orleans Hornets.  The 6′ 10″ Spanish star had his contract bought out for 1.5 million dollars, and Hornets spokesman Harold Kaufman has announced a press conference to announce a new player Friday but could not state a name due to a contract not being yet signed.  The 26 year old averaged 10. 8 points and 6.3  rebounds in 33 games last season playing for Fuenlabrada in Spain.  According to ESPN Deportes the contract is for three years, with the final year a team option.  So welcome to the New Orleans Hornets Gustavo, look forward to seeing what you have to offer on the court.
