Salim Stoudamire always had a few things going for him. He had an awesome afro-like cut, he had a beautiful 3-point stroke, and he’s cousins with none other than Damon Stoudamire. After graduating from Lake Oswego High School in Oregon, Salim went to play for Lute Olson at Arizona.

SS immediately made an impact his first two seasons averaging 12.9 ppg (12.8 fresh, 13.0 soph). The next season Stoudamire shot a career worst, a 41.5 three-point percentage, and still averaged 16.3 ppg. The next year Salim absolutely caught fire. He ended up breaking Steve Kerr’s three-point field goal percentage record with a staggering 50.4% (5% better than his career high). The point guard averaged 18.4 ppg, and led the Wildcats’ run in the 2005 tournament. In the Sweet 16, SS hit a game-winning fadeaway  J to beat Joey Graham and Oklahoma State, sending Arizona to the Elite 8. Unfortunately that’s as far as they would come, #1 seed Illinois led by Deron Williams took them down by one-point.

In Salim’s Arizona career he played with some awesome/random/legit players:

  • Luke Walton
  • Channing Frye
  • Will Bynum
  • Andre Igoudala
  • Hassan Adams
  • Mustafa Shakur

In the 2005 NBA Draft, Salim was drafted 31st overall by the Atlanta Hawks. His first year was somewhat successful as he averaged 9.7 ppg, but the 3-ball wasn’t the same. He never reached 40.0 3PT% in his 3-year NBA career, and even his afro wasn’t as cool with Josh Childress on his team. Each season Salim’s minutes decreased along with his percentages and his animal intake. Salim went all vegan on everybody, and although it’s not proven that his diet affected his play, his shot wasn’t the same.

Stoudamire attempted to make a comeback in 2010 playing with the D-League’s Idaho Stampde, but was later traded to the Reno Bighorns where he didn’t get as much playing time.

If only he could have played in college forever…

(Note: This is the correct way to spell “Stoudamire”. I always mess up on Sporcle because for some reason Amar’e spells it differently, “Stoudemire”)
