MIAMI -- Rashard Lewis rejoined the Miami Heat for Friday night's preseason game against the Brooklyn Nets after missing nearly two weeks because of a death in the family.
The veteran forward spent the time in Los Angeles following the death of his brother-in-law, who had lived with the player's family for a year when Lewis played for the Seattle SuperSonics.
Lewis said he didn't want to discuss the situation in detail because but it still too painful. He clearly was happy to be back with the Heat after missing four preseason games.
"If anything, being around the guys in the locker room, on the basketball, is kind of a safe haven -- it makes you forget about all that," said Lewis, who practiced with the team Thursday.
"I think when you're at home, is when you kind of reminisce. Being around these guys and getting a lot of support from these guys does help you go on with your normal life."
Lewis said he managed to do cardio workouts and lift weights during his absence from the team.
"The treadmill at 24 Hour Fitness couldn't hold my weight," he said with a smile. "It's never the same as running up and down the basketball court. I did what what I could, but most of the time I was doing stuff back there with the family."
Lewis is beginning his 16th NBA season and second with the Heat. Like last season, he figures to be deep on Miami's bench.
"Hopefully, I think the opportunity will be there (for more minutes), but at the same time, we still have a lot of the same guys," Lewis said. "When my name is called, I most definitely have to always be ready."
Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said Lewis would play against the Nets.
"It will be a great mental diversion for him," Spoelstra said.

This video is pretty funny if you ask me, and I can’t stop laughing. The Heat superstar and his wife decided to pull a Halloween prank on her father who was just minding his business watching some television on the couch. Halloween has started early in the James household. Be very aware!! mrs_savannahrj getting her pops… http://t.co/tlMM30Bcxm — LeBron James (@KingJames) October...
LeBron James and the Miami Heat are the favorites in just about every category this season.
GMs around the NBA picked the Heat to three-peat (75.9%) and LeBron to win MVP (69%), while also voting him for a bunch of other superlatives, including player you'd build your team around (89.7%).
But when it came down to the player you want taking the last shot, they took Kevin Durant...
MIAMI -- Udonis Haslem heads into the new season healthy following offseason knee surgery and better prepared thanks to a new appreciation for viewing video.
"I've been watching a lot of film, trying to figure out how to be more effective and how to stay in the game offensively and defensively," Haslem said. "This is the first time I've watched this much film...
Mike Miller may bring a lawsuit against the Miami Heat after losing $1.7 million. The team introduced Miller to Haider Zafar, who then defrauded the player.
The Miami Heat have released Eric Griffin, a league source told RealGM.
Griffin, an athletic forward at 6-foot-8, intrigued the Heat in the Las Vegas summer league and appeared in six preseason games. He averaged nearly two points and one rebound in the preseason – highlighted by a leap over the 6-foot-10 Miles Plumlee against Brooklyn Nets.
Entering his second professional season...
Since we near All Hallow’s Eve, LeBron James wife Savannah decided to play the role of “scary figure” and caused one individual close to LeBron James to get freaked out.
Watch as Savannah cloaked in a Mike Myers Halloween get-up and weilding a knife causes a man sitting on the James couch to get a tad scared:

One of the benefits of sitting courtside at an NBA game is the chance to talk with the players and experience the full range of emotions while sitting so close.
Last night, one little kid at the New Orleans Pelicans/Miami Heat game got the chance to play a quick game of catch with LeBron James and that can be seen below:

Greg Oden smiling.
Greg Oden hadn’t played in an NBA game since 2009 thanks to two very serious knee surgeries, so it made perfect sense that he signed with the Miami Heat, a team that would allow him to sit all the way at the end of the bench for the majority of the regular season so he could rest, and then come into the NBA Playoffs healthier than ever and rebound like he’s...
The Miami Heat's regular season roster is now set at 15. It was reported early on Saturday Miami was releasing Eric Griffin. And we found out later in the day that the Heat also released Justin Hamilton.
Both of these moves were expected. Hamilton played rarely in the preseason, averaging just 2.6 points in 5.6 minutes per game. Griffin didn't get much more court time...
In the 60′s, it was Wilt Chamberlain vs. Bill Russell. In the 80′s, it was Larry Bird against Magic Johnson.
Right in the 2010′s, it appears to be LeBron James vs. the rest of the NBA according to a Miami Herald interview with LeBron himself.
Check out the below quote where he notes that he did have a rivalry with Paul Pierce but says that it has changed since:
MIAMI (AP) -- Deron Williams got his first preseason action. LeBron James and Chris Bosh didn't need any more.
Williams scored 11 points in 10 minutes, Alan Anderson scored 17 points, and the Brooklyn Nets finished the exhibition season with a 108-87 win over the Miami Heat on Friday night.
The Nets went 5-2 in the preseason, the Heat 5-3.
Paul Pierce scored 16 points and...
This article was difficult to write. Allen Iverson is not only my favorite basketball player, but my favorite athlete of all time. The drive with which he played the game of basketball was unparalleled, and his presence on the court is greatly missed, especially by the struggling Sixers.Be sure to check out the full article, which originally ran on Philly.com, here. Allen Iverson...
Love them or hate them, the Miami Heat are good for business in basketball betting circles and they open the 2013-2014 season as solid favorites to repeat as NBA champions.
Make that, three-peat as champions.
LeBron James et al are +250 on the NBA futures menu at shops such as Topbet.eu.
Oklahoma City is a fairly distant second betting choice at +650 with the San Antonio Spurs well...
With just a few days left before the 2013-2014 NBA season kicks off, and both teams from last season’s NBA finals have new on the court looks to showcase.
The San Antonio Spurs will don a camo military-inspired uniform in salute to those in the Armed Forces. The Spurs will debut the look two days after Veteran’s day on November 13th when they take on the Washington Wizards...
