Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports the Grizzlies and Raptors are closing in on a deal that would send Rudy Gay from Memphis to Toronto. The big hang up in the deal is finding a third team willing to take on Jose Calderon's expiring contract. It would seem this is a perfect place for the Magic to step in and use that $12 million trade exception they have handy. However, Wojnarowski reports the Grizzlies would likely receive a young player and a future draft pick in the deal in addition to whatever the third team would provide. So the question Orlando has to ask if Memphis or Toronto would come calling trying to include Orlando in this deal is what would the team get out of it? Jose Calderon's expiring deal would only be worth the money left on it if the Magic can rid themselves of one of their larger contracts -- Hedo Turkoglu, Glen Davis or Jameer Nelson -- and possibly receive some assets in return. Seeing as Wojnarowski reports the Raptors consider Terrence Ross untouchable in this deal, it does not seem like there is much to offer here. When looking at both rosters, assuming one player is going to Memphis from Toronto, there are not much in the form of young players that Orlando would want to acquire. Unless names like Jerryd Bayless, Quincy Pondexter, Hamed Haddadi  or Tony Wroten interest you, Memphis has little to offer. The same goes for Toronto's remaining young guys like Ed Davis, Alan Anderson, John Lucas III or Quincy Acy. It just seems like the Magic are not the team to facilitate this trade. Knowing how Rob Hennigan likes his patience, the Magic probably will not use their large trade exception at this point without getting a player or an asset back they really like. Right now, neither Toronto nor Memphis seem to have what Orlando would want. However if Toronto decides it can part with Terrence Ross (averaging 7.2 points per game as a rookie this year and shooting 34.1 percent from the 3-point line), then a deal might make sense for Orlando. That all depends on how the Magic staff view Ross and his potential. It does not seem likely Toronto woud part with him at this juncture. Or if Memphis (or Toronto for that matter) would be willing to take on one of Orlando's big contracts to make this deal happen.
