One big man after another walked through the Philadelphia 76ers' practice facility in recent weeks and showed their stuff.
On Thursday night, one of those guys will come back to stay.
The Sixers, who bowed of the postseason in the second round, need a power forward or center to clog the middle. They should find one with the 15th pick in the NBA draft.
''I think this is a good time to be 10 to 20,'' team president Rod Thorn said. ''There are some good players there that can turn out to be as good as some of the guys taken a little higher.''
Percy Jones III, Terrence Jones, Andrew Nicholson, Arnett Moultrie, John Henson, Tyler Zeller, Marquis Teague, Hollis Thompson, Moe Harkless, Quincy Miller and Mike Scott are just some of the players that worked out in Philadelphia over the past month.
''If you go big, you would like to get an athletic big,'' Thorn said. ''Our guys aren't super athletic, our bigs. So if you could get an athletic big who can rebound and help defensively and make a jump shot, that would be a real coup for us.
''I think we are going to have a choice at 15 of two or three guys we like. There are two or three guys that bring excitement to us, but they may not be there. But we are hopeful.''
One big man who won't be there for certain when the Sixers pick is Anthony Davis. He's expected to go to the New Orleans Hornets at No. 1.
''If you take Davis out of the mix, there are some guys who are going to be really good players, but there isn't a heck of a lot of difference,'' Thorn said. ''There's a whole bunch of guys after you take him out and a lot of it is in the eye of the beholder.''
The Sixers also have two picks in the second round, Nos. 45 and 54. If they get their targeted guy in Round 1, they could look to add a shooter later.
But an impact shooter likely would have to come through trade or free agency, which starts three days after the draft. The Sixers have tough decisions to make on center Spencer Hawes and guard Louis Williams, who will become free agents. They also have to figure out whether to keep forward Elton Brand.
''Guys are going to ask for a certain range, but until you actually start talking, you don't really know,'' Thorn said. ''Everyone wants as much as they can get. Everybody tries to overprice themselves to start with, but the reality jumps up very quickly of what you are worth out there. The scary thing this year is so many teams that have money and are way under the cap and it only takes one team.''
The Sixers are coming off a successful season in their first year under new ownership. Led by Jrue Holiday, Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala, they started 20-9, posted their first winning record (35-31) since 2004-05, and won a playoff series for the first time since 2003 by knocking off the top-seeded Chicago Bulls.
Now they want to move onto that next step and become legitimate championship contenders.
That's the hard part.
''If you look at some of the teams behind us, they are getting better and some of the teams ahead of us are still going to be good,'' Thorn said. ''I think it is imperative that you always try to get better. If you don't, teams start passing you.
''We are in that area where there are a lot of teams that there aren't a heck of a lot of difference in so we have to try and get better because we would like to move up and not be the eighth team in the playoffs.
''We are going to have to get better to do that.''

The 76ers take Moe Harkless Grade C+
The 76ers have three picks in this year’s draft and they need to draft big. With Spencer Hawes being an free agent the only true center on their roster is Nikola Vucevic. Power forward Elton Brand is on the down side and Lavoy Allen is still coming into his own. While I think the 76ers should have taken Tyler Zeller here I like the pick of Harkless. The picks reallys...
The Kids At The Spencer Hawes Basketball Camp Are Getting Ripped Off
Ugh, I’m so sorry, you guys, but I’m really pissed off so we’re going to talk about politics for just a second. Philadelphia 76ers center Spencer Hawes is 24-years old, attended a highly-regarded prep school, and went to the University of Washington. Because he’s 7-foot-1, he’s been able to play basketball his whole life and he parlayed that into being the 10th player...
2011-2012 Sixers’ Report Cards: Thad Young
Looking back upon this season, it is somewhat difficult to grade Thaddeus Young’s fifth season with the Sixers’ franchise. While he performed his role well and played solidly throughout the season, you can’t help but be left with the feeling of wanting more from the lanky lefty. Since the Sixers selected Thad in 2007 after just one successful season at Georgia Tech, Philly...
Doc, Collins to be analysts for summer Olympics
I know all of the talk is focused on tonight's NBA Draft, but I found this pretty interesting. According to a piece on ESPN Boston, Doc Rivers & Doug Collins will serve as basketball analysts for this years summer Olympics. Both Rivers and Collins have been NBA commentators for ESPN and TNT respectively, and will join each other for the Olympics. More on this story here.
Elton Brand: KG has a lot left in the tank
I was in New York to cover Steve Nash’s “Showdown in Chinatown” charity soccer game. There, I spoke to Elton Brand briefly about Kevin Garnett, against whom Brand and the Philadelphia 76′ers matched up for seven grueling games in the conference semifinals.
The simple question was whether he, as a man who faced him on the floor just a month ago, saw any signs of wear in...

The Philadelphia 76ers took Maurice Harkless from St. Johns with the 15th pick in the NBA draft. The nineteen-year-old Harkless is a small forward, weighs 190 pounds and stands 6′ 9″. He was the Big East Rookie of the Year and started all 32 games for the Red Storm. He averaged 15 points, eight rebounds, and a little over one block and one assist per game. His free-throw...
76ers make bold moves on draft night
The Philadelphia 76ers wanted a big man. They got one, along with a young combo forward who team president Rod Thorn claimed was the brain trust's unanimous choice at No. 15. Selecting St. John's forward Moe Harkless was a surprise, considering the team's need for a big man and the depth of quality power forward/centers. Then they got Arnett Moultrie, a solid center...
Sixers Select Harkless, Trade for Moultrie
On the night of the NBA Draft, Sixers fans were anxious but slightly worried. Fans did not know what to expect heading into Thursday night but the front office did. By the time 15th pick hit the clock, the Sixers knew they had their man chosen.
With the 15th overall pick in the NBA draft, the Sixers selected the 6’9” Big East Rookie of the Year Maurice “Moe” Harkless out...
Charles Barkley wants to be a GM, says he’s not afraid to suck
The Philadelphia 76ers are looking for a new GM after saying that Rod Thorn will be out as the team’s president of basketball operations. Over the past few years, Charles Barkley has expressed interest in becoming a GM. He even said a few weeks ago that he was interested in leading his former team.
Barkley’s reason for wanting to be a GM is fantastic, as usual.
“I want to...
