It seems as though every statement and every article these days begin with "Sources say" or "Sources close to the situation" or even better, the ever present "League Sources". You have to wonder who all these sources are. Sometimes I think it's the infamous all seeing Magic Eight Ball. I woke this morning to "sources" saying all kinds of interesting things. League sources told the Globe that the Los Angeles Clippers would consider Rivers their No. 1 choice if he were able to escape his contract. And those sources also confirmed that Rivers has mutual interest in coaching the Clippers. “If Doc is honest, his dream scenario is him coaching the Clippers with Kevin Garnett and a chance to win the championship,” a league source said. League sources said that Rivers would take a pay cut if he joined the Clippers, perhaps making as much as $4 million. He’s scheduled to make $7 million per year with the Celtics. But if a deal can’t be worked out, one league source indicated that Rivers may well walk away from coaching and return to television broadcasting. A league source said that Paul would consider Rivers his No. 1 choice to become the team’s next coach. It is also considered likely that Garnett, who is especially close with Rivers, would waive his no-trade clause to join the coach in LA. The Clippers have reached out to the Celtics to request permission to speak with Rivers, but president of basketball operations Danny Ainge denied that request, a league source said. “I would say that the ball is in [the Clippers’] court,” a league source said. “If they are aggressive and make a good offer, they could get something done soon.” Another league source said that there is also the belief that the Celtics would demand too much compensation for Rivers. These teams were discussing a deal near the trade deadline that, in various scenarios, discussed Garnett and Pierce as well as Bledsoe and Jordan. The talks did not involve Griffin, who one league source described as “untouchable”. Source to Globe: “If Doc is honest, his dream scenario is him coaching the Clippers with Kevin Garnett & a chance to win the championship." Two league sources with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed yesterday that if Rivers does indeed leave, former Clippers coach Vinnie Del Negro will receive serious consideration as his replacement. Ultimately, though, the source expects Rivers to return for one simple reason — the Celtics are the only team willing to pay him that annual $7 million salary. “I don’t think (Rivers) can take a pass on that money,” he said. “If I were him, I’d want to come back and then get fired. Nine years really is a long time to be in one place.” Another issue has become a byproduct of Rivers’ inner debate, according to that same veteran NBA source. While the coach attempts to make up his mind, his assistants live in limbo. Their contracts expire on June 30, and as such, all have been forced into making backup plans of their own. “They’re being forced into looking for work, because they don’t have contracts,” he said. “The assistants really are a key to all of this.” Sources said Thursday the Celtics want Rivers back and are determined to prevent him from coaching another NBA team next season since he has three years and $21 million left on his contract. But sources added that Boston could be moved to let Rivers out of his deal depending on the level of compensation the Celtics get from the Clippers, whether that's a veteran player or future draft picks. One source close to the situation said Thursday that the Celtics do not expect any decisions on the future of Garnett or Pierce to be made before the NBA draft June 27. Wow! Those "sources" sure have been busy. Just once, instead of the ubiquitous sources, I'd love to have someone actually own up to their leaks and comments. But, thanks to all these sources, we know that Doc and the Clippers have a "thing" and it happens to be Doc's dream. We also know that Vinnie Del Negro, former Clippers coach would be a possible replacement for Doc, which is a big surprise to me. We find out from these sources that Doc would be willing to take a big pay cut to coach the Clippers but he might stay with the Celtics because no one else will pay him $7 million to coach. Or, he might stay for the sake of his assistants and maybe then just be a jerk so he can get fired. And we know that Danny isn't going to just let Doc waltz away to coach the Clippers without getting something good in return. It's interesting that the source is saying that they won't make a decision on Pierce before the June 27 draft. That either means that Pierce is a part of a draft day deal or that they are going to pick up his option on June 31 or they are going to let him walk and just pay the $5 million. I think Danny has already explored options and has made his decision for the most part but we won't know what it is before the June 27 draft. Things are getting really interesting. Now if one of these sources could only read minds and let us know what is REALLY going on, then we'd have it made. [Discuss on CG Forums!]
