Still searching for answers as they try to end their road slump, the San Antonio Spurs might have a tough time finding them in a showdown at Memphis.
While the Spurs hope to avoid their seventh loss in nine road games, the Grizzlies look for their fourth straight win as the top two teams in the Southwest Division meet on Friday night.
Memphis (23-10) has a chance to gain ground, entering this game trailing San Antonio (28-10) by 2 1/2 games.
The Spurs, however, have beaten the Grizzlies five straight times, including a 99-95 overtime win on Dec. 1, since Memphis stunned top-seeded San Antonio in the first round of the 2010-11 playoffs.
"You never forget those kinds of series," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "Memphis is playing well so it's going to be a tough game."
San Antonio captured its 11th straight victory at home with a 108-105 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, but has struggled to find the same success on the road.
Eight of its 10 losses have come there, the latest a 95-88 defeat at New Orleans on Monday that snapped the Hornets' seven-game home losing streak.
San Antonio ranks among the top three in the NBA in scoring at 104.9 points per game, but has averaged just 85.5 in its last two road games compared to 112.0 in its last six at home.
Guard Manu Ginobili, though, has given the team a spark, averaging 19.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists in his last three games.
Tim Duncan and Tony Parker combined for 57 points to lead the Spurs past the visiting Grizzlies in December. Duncan is still posting big numbers against Memphis, averaging 24.7 points and 14.7 rebounds in the last three meetings.
While the Spurs made 12 of 25 (48.0 percent) from beyond the arc against the Lakers, they've hit on 15 of 55 (27.3 percent) in their last two road games.
It doesn't figure to get any easier against a Memphis team leading the NBA in scoring defense (89.1). The Grizzlies have held opponents to just 82.6 points per game over their last seven contests.
"We're just going to have to play a little bit better," Parker said. "That's the NBA season, you're going to have ups and downs."
The Grizzlies return home, where they're 13-4, after sweeping a three-game West Coast road trip. Memphis won for the fourth time in five games with a 94-87 victory at Golden State on Wednesday night.
"We've been going through some ups and downs and had some lapses, some kind of lapse games," guard Rudy Gay said. "We had to come out here for ourselves to get three out of three.''
After outscoring the Warriors 60-34 in the paint, the Grizzlies rank near the top of the NBA in points in the paint at 43.8 per game. That could be a factor against the Spurs, who rank in the bottom third of the league this month with an average of 42.4 paint points allowed.
Forward Zach Randolph has made a major impact inside, leading the NBA with 23 double-doubles. He had 17 points and 15 rebounds in last month's loss at San Antonio despite shooting 5 for 21.
Center Marc Gasol has scored 18.7 points per game on 23-of-39 (59.0 percent) in his last three against the Spurs.
The Grizzlies would like to improve their efficiency from the outside after hitting a season-low 2 for 17 (11.8 percent) from 3-point range on Wednesday.
The Spurs have one of the toughest perimeter defenses in the league, ranking second in opponent 3-point percentage (32.7).

Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph comes across as one of the toughest players in the NBA, but the dude has a pretty odd phobia.
It’s no surprise that DeJuan Blair may be moved prior to the trade deadline on February 21. The San Antonio Spurs have been shopping him for quite some time, and nearly traded him in June. In the days leading up to the 2012 NBA Draft, the Spurs spoke to a number of teams about the 23-year-old big man. They nearly sent Blair to the Miami HEAT, but the deal fell apart.
Now, San Antonio...
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Zach Randolph understands the NBA. When his name surfaced in Memphis Grizzlies trade rumors this week, the power forward took it in stride.
Its part of business. Its not personal. Its part of business, Randolph said after Friday shootaround at FedEx Forum.
Randolphs future in Memphis is uncertain. His rejuvenated production isnt. His 16.9 points per game comes...
Tony Parker scored 24 points and the San Antonio Spurs handed the slumping Los Angeles Lakers their fifth straight loss with a 108-105 victory Wednesday night.
Manu Ginobili added 19 points and Tiago Splitter and Stephen Jackson had 14 each for San Antonio, which has won 11 straight at home.

Apparently this video was made to spread the word about Canada Basketball’s 90th Anniversary as Spurs’ sharp shooter Matt Bonner shows off an arsenal of trick shots in the team’s practice facility in addition to some pretty epic celebration moves.
We all heard the news about Rudy Gay being on the trading block down in Memphis. But now the rumor is that the Grizzlies are willing to hear out offers for the monster, Zach Randolph. There are quite a few teams who could make some reasonable offers. Keep an eye on this.
With the Wizards continuing to be one of the worst teams in the NBA, it is only fitting that people start looking at moves/trades they can make to improve the team by the trade deadline. Yesterday our writer Cory Grubbs took a look at a few trade possibilities that Washington could make. One of those trades happened to be with the Memphis Grizzlies and in particular, for Rudy Gay...
Eighty-two wins and 37 losses in a calendar year is not bad for some old guys.
But there’s no championship or NBA Finals appearance to show for it, so far.
The strike-shortened season of 2011-12 created an unusual schedule, with games bundled more closely on the sports calendar. The Spurs were 47-15 in the regular season (50-16 overall, counting games before 2012 began) and 10...
Rudy Gay is reportedly on the trade block.
NBA fans watching the Los Angeles Lakers-San Antonio Spurs game on Wednesday caught a glimpse of what goes on behind-the-scenes during a typical TV timeout.
With 5:09 left in the game and a break in the action, ESPN ran a promo for the second game of its double-header. The teams lined up for the Spurs to inbound the ball, but the referees stopped to see if they should break for...
The Memphis Grizzlies are reportedly shopping Rudy Gay, not necessarily to improve the team, but to shed his onerous contract. Gay is owed $16.5M this year, $17.9M next and $19.3M in 2014-2015. Clearly Gay’s five-year $82M deal, which he signed July 1, 2010, was made in the hopes he’d become a superstar. Many derided the contract as inflated, but Gay has the talent to be an elite...
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Memphis Grizzlies are 2-0 at Oracle Arena this season, but as far as Zach Randolph is concerned, Wednesday's 94-87 victory over the Golden State Warriors was the first time to celebrate. Randolph dominated his matchup with fellow Western Conference All-Star candidate David Lee, contributing a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double -- his 23rd of the young...
The San Antonio Spurs (27-10) will be hosting the struggling Los Angeles Lakers (15-19) tonight at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.
The Spurs are coming off a disappointing loss to the New Orleans Hornets in a contest they were outhustled with the younger Hornets team using their youth against the veteran Spurs that erased a dominating performance against Philadelphia the...
After their loss to the Hornets on Monday, Manu Ginobili was gracious enough to say that his San Antonio Spurs (27-10) must play better against the Lakers (15-19), a team, he says, "got heart" and "play hard", in order for them to keep their 10-game winning streak at home alive. Not sure which Lakers team and what season he's pertaining to, but it's good...
After failing to break out of their road funk despite Tony Parker's heroics, the San Antonio Spurs look to continue their dominance at home.
The Spurs appear primed to get back in the win column and capture their 12th straight home victory Sunday night when they meet the slumping Minnesota Timberwolves.
San Antonio has won 15 straight home games in the series by an average...
