SAN JOSE, CA - MARCH 20: Head coach Brad Stevens of the Butler Bulldogs watches game action against the Murray State Racers during the second round of the 2010 NCAA men's basketball tournament at HP Pavilion on March 20, 2010 in San Jose, California. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)
As always, Tommy put last night's game in complete perspective 140 characters at a time. Before the game, he talked about what the Celtics need to do to improve and he hit the nail on the head when he said that they need to find the right mix. I think Brad Stevens did a good job of doing that last night when he changed the lineups and rotations. And, they needed to find a leader at the end of the game and last night, it was Brandon Bass. "1 thing I liked when I was coaching was to have a guy like Pressey – what I called the accelerator ... to accelerate the pace of the game" — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 Having an accelerator come into the game was Red's whole concept behind the 6th man. For Red, it was to have a starting quality player come in fresh when the other team brought in their second unit. Pressey does two things for this team. First, he brings energy off the bench and does pick up the pace. Second, he gives the second unit a true point guard to give them direction. And Pressey did the job last night. Pressey finds a shot: "That was nifty, he bumped the guy off the shot & created an opening for himself! Little guys do things like that!" — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 Two other players who energized that second unit were Gerald Wallace and Kally Olynyk. They combined for a great play that got Tommy excited. Wallace hits Olynyk for a layup: "NOW THERE'S A BIG MAN, workin' hard, findin' a way to get open!!!" — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 Moving Green back to small forward seemed to help his game as well. He seemed to play more at ease last night. DEEP 3 from Green: "This was from the lobby of the building, pretty much ... He stepped on the leprechaun's nose, almost!" — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 The last team that went 0-4 to start the season was Tommy's first season as coach. He would know how Brad Stevens was feeling going into this game. On Stevens losing 1st 4 games: "I don't think Brad ought to feel any pressure. Cause Danny Ainge is like Red Auerbach, he has your back." — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 And Tommy summed up Jared Sullinger perfectly. Wallace assists Sullinger: "When he seals a guy in the paint, he really seals him in. It's like somebody licked the envelope. Velcro, too!" — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 I loved Sully's play last night. It's clear that he's finally getting his conditioning back after his off season surgery. Tommy liked it too. Sullinger draws charge: "Big Baby was the champion at doing that, but Sullinger quickly is learning that trade." — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 And I agree with Tommy that Wallace as the 6th man is a good idea. It allows Jeff Green to play where he is more comfortable and it brings that spark off the bench that is so important. The 6th man role began in Boston and it has been a very important role over the years. It is an honor as Tommy points out. More on Wallace: "I would absolutely make him the sixth man, and tell him what a privilege it is to BE the sixth man." — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 The Jazz did fight back from 22 down to cut it to 6 but this time, the Celtics didn't fold. They fought back to win by 10. The problem, as Tommy so aptly points out, was that the Celtics stopped running and slowed the game down. With this team, it's a recipe for disaster every time. "The pace has slowed down to where the TURTLE is gonna win!!!" #Celtics lead down to 6 after leading by 22 at the end of the 3rd — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 And the Tommy Award goes to..... "He's starting to fulfill a role that's very important for this basketball team." With 9 pts& 9 REB, "Gerald Wallace wins the #TommyAward!" — Tommy Heinsohn (@CSNTommy) November 7, 2013 [Discuss on CG Forums!]
