The Larry Brown Hire is Huge for SMU
Most indications are pointing to Larry Brown being hired as the next head coach at Southern Methodist. If the reports or true, then the hire would be huge for the Mustangs basketball program. Larry Brown is one of the elite minds in all of basketball. He is the only coach ever to win both an NCAA Championship (Kansas) and an NBA Championship (Detroit).

Brown is also one of the few coaches to be able to succeed at both levels at many stops. He has coached pretty much everywhere, sometimes more than once. Brown is known as a coaching nomad, but there aren’t many that can match his pedigree since he wins pretty much everywhere he goes (Knicks and Bobcats don’t count).
Brown’s college coaching career began with Davidson, which lasted about a month before he jumped to the ABA. His next real coaching job came in 1979 where he took the UCLA Bruins to the1980 NCAA Finals. The Bruins would lost to Louisville in the championship, but UCLA fans will forever hold Brown in high regard for bringing the program back, even if they did have to vacate their run.
After a stint with the New Jersey Nets, Brown came back to college to coach Kansas. He tool the 1986 team to the Final Four and won the whole thing with Danny Manning in 1988. After the Kansas run, Brown went back to the NBA and never looked back to college, until this week.
With Brown, SMU will get one of the most seasoned coach, who knows how to win. Brown’s college coaching blood is as blue as it gets. If this were the bible, Brown would be Moses (minus the beard and tablets). He was coached by Dean Smith as a player at North Carolina. Smith was coached by Phog Allen as a player at Kansas. Allen was coached by James Naismith who invented the sport. You aren’t going to find a coach any better than Larry Brown at SMU. This is the top of the line. Mustang fans have to be excited.
