The Pistons have settled in basketball purgatory, stuck between the desire to be a playoff team and truly bottoming out. They’ve been in this situation for a few years now. They might as well own real estate in the back half of the lottery. So goes the woes of the once mighty Pistons. This all started when the Pistons decided to attempt to rebuild on the fly in the Fall of 2008, shipping off Chauncey Billups in return for Allen Iverson’s expiring deal. Many questioned the deal at the time, but most believed in Joe Dumars’ vision. We saw a guy who built a perennial championship contender, and we bought in to his plans. Perhaps we shouldn’t have. The cap space was floundered on the likes of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. Since then, the Pistons have been in the No Man’s Land of the NBA, not quite a playoff team but too “good” to get a top 5 pick.
