A couple years ago my brother was in Sacramento for a business trip, and texted me to tell me that he was in a restaurant sitting near former NBA point guard Kevin Johnson.
This instantly brought back memories for both me and my brother. In the summer of 1993, we both watched the NBA Finals as his Chicago Bulls battled my Phoenix Suns for the title. We each cheered for those teams as a result of following our favorite players. Michael Jordan of the Bulls was my brother's favorite and Charles Barkley of the Suns was mine.
We watched all of that series, including the triple overtime thriller at old Chicago Stadium in Game 3. Phoenix won that game, but went back home for Game 6 trailing Chicago 3-2.
Game 6 was another thriller, and came down to the final possession. Kevin Johnson ("KJ") made a good move to the basket, but his game-winning shot attempt was blocked by Horace Grant, Chicago's defensive ace, to seal the championship victory for Chicago. Coincidentally, Horace's twin brother Harvey played for our hometown Washington Bullets, but was known more for his offense than his defense.
Back at the restaurant, my brother was waiting for my response. I texted "Tell KJ it's too bad he was being guarded by Horace Grant and not Harvey Grant!"
My joke attempt was rejected like Kevin Johnson's shot.
