Last week, it was reported that the Utah Jazz had had signed 22-year-old power forward Derrick Favors to a four-year, $49 million contract extension. The defensive-minded Favors has quietly been one of the NBA’s best defensive big men when he has gotten onto the court, and the Jazz seem to believe he can be even better.
“Very rarely will you get a 6-10, 260-pound young player saying, ‘Hey, I’m a defender. I’m a rebounder. Build the defense around me. That’s what I want,’” Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey told The Salt Lake Tribune. “So if he can be our Bill Russell, we’ll be very, very pleased.”
Favors has had a tough time getting regular playing time over Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, who left via free agency this summer. When he did play, however, he was impressive. He had the second-highest block percentage among power forwards last season at 5.7 percent, trailing only Serge Ibaka‘s 7.4 percent, and was ranked seventh in that category overall. (Stiemsma

SEATTLE, WA - Was the gun made out of basketball leather? CNN reports that 79 year old NBA legend Bill Russell was arrested this week for allegedly bringing a loaded gun to Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle. Bringing a loaded weapon into an airport is one thing, I’d just like to know why Bill Russell specifically needed one. When I think of him I think of Morgan Freeman...
All along I figured Russell didn’t do it on purpose, but I would like to know why he needs the gun. It is his right as an American, but who wants to harm Bill Russell?
“Before boarding my flight from Seattle to Boston, I had accidentally left a legal firearm in my bag,” Russell said in a statement. “I apologize and truly regret the mistake.
“I was issued a citation by the...
Former NBA great Bill Russell apologized for an incident at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Wednesday. Russell carried loaded .38-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun that was found in the carry-on bag by TSA officials. Russell was arrested, the gun was confiscated, and the Boston Celtics’ legend was released. Russell reportedly had a permit for the weapon, which was...
It is easy to understand all at once both the hope and the concern.
There was Derrick Favors the 6-foot-10 forward pulling down 17 rebounds earlier this month against the Portland Trail Blazers blocking shots and finishing at the rim. There was Enes Kanter barrel chested and barely 21 years old backing down defenders and hitting jump shots en route to 23 points.
But if the duo...
