It has been a while since we talked about the "Process" as Rob Hennigan describes it and how the Magic are going to build themselves back up. Frankly it might be a while before we talk about it again. The beginning of the season is a re-evaluation of what the team has on the roster and keeping a careful ear to the ground to see if a move can be made for the next step. This summer was about clearing the deck some while still maintaining a strong, professional locker room. This is an odd team for a rebuilding team because of the mix of young players expected to play a part in the future -- Maurice Harkless, Arron Afflalo and Andrew Nicholson -- and veterans who might not be -- Hedo Turkoglu, Jameer Nelson and Glen Davis. The future remains very mysterious about where the Magic will go next. Rob Hennigan, though, likely has principles he will follow that are fluid and will change depending on the circumstances and what opportunities become available. James Harden ...

Could Magic be too average for own good?

For the uninitiated among us, lets set the record straight: New Orlando Magic general manager Rob Hennigans most critical misstep this summer was not merely the act of trading franchise center Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers. After all, it was plain to see that the Howard-Magic relationship had fallen into such a state of disrepair, the cloud hanging over the team growing...

DeQuan Jones made his point

DeQuan Jones turned heads this preseason and forced the Magic into a difficult choice. It was a choice that cost the franchise $5 million. Jones may not make more than $500,000 this year, but the decision to cut Quentin Richardson cost 10 times that amount. The undrafted rookie from Miami was not much of a scorer or offensive player in college, but became a revelation in the...

Magic Day Video: Darrel Armstrong with the steal and dunk

I had to consult with Crossover's second in command, Phillip Rossman-Reich, for the video for Orlando Magic day. Apparently, former Magic guard Darrel Armstrong is adored in Magic nation. Yeah, who knew? But as Phil told me the reasons why Darrel is so loved is because of his heart and hustle. Something the 2012-13 Magic squad is going to need considering the team is left in...

Big Baby ready for starring role

Last year when Dwight Howard went down with a back injury, Glen Davis really stepped up in his absence. Davis’ numbers went up and he averaged 19 points a game in the Magic’s first round playoff loss to the Indiana Pacers. With Howard shipped off to L.A., Davis is hoping his streak of solid play will continue, and he’ll become the go to guy in Orlando. Never short on confidence...

Orlando’s Roster Still Has Strong Leaders

So who will be the senior leaders in the locker room and on the court for Orlando this year? Jameer Nelson, JJ Redick and Hedo Turkoglu immediately come to mind when thinking tenure

Magic's youth movement has strong leadership to learn from

One thing that is generally a staple for successful teams is the vocal leadership of players with tenure on that specific team. Senior leadership cannot be undervalued. In an 82-game season, senior leadership is invaluable, not only for their statistical contribution on the court but also for maintaining morale and unity off the court. So who will be the senior leaders in the...

Eklund: The Magic of the Winter Classic ...Just Another Bargaining Chip.

For those of us who have supported this game since the days before Cable TV and the Internet it is almost unfathomable to think the NHL, a league which hasn't hit many homeruns in their day, is about to cut off the one true "magic in a bottle" event they have come up with. Having been to all the Winter Classics I can tell you they are fantastic celebrations of the...

By counting down to the beginning of the season on November 2 against Denver. Let's continue: Today, the 2012-13 season opens. Not every one will be 0-0 after today. Getting to know the Magic: Jameer Nelson

Nine-year veteran Jameer Nelson has spent his entire professional career creating opportunities for the Orlando Magic. The point guards everyday display of power and confidence compressed into his short, stocky frame can be likened to the conclusiveness of another concentrated point, used at the ends of sentences to finalize all doubt. In Nelsons mind, he is the man. Period. And...

Nuggets-Magic Preview

The Orlando Magic take the first step in the post-Dwight Howard era Friday night when they open the season at home against the Denver Nuggets, and it's still anyone's guess as to what direction they are headed. Howard was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in August. Gone too in offseason trades are power forward Ryan Anderson and shooting guard Jason Richardson, which means...
