New York Sports-Kings:
J.R. Smith is having a great year on the court for the Knicks. So why is he finding his way in the news for things he says off the court?
He actually never even physically said the things that have gotten the attention. He instead hits the Twitter world and is finding ways to take jabs at people through the World Wide Web rather than saying it to their faces.
The latest “tweet heard ‘round the world” was directed at Brooklyn’s Kris Humphries after Humphries made a comment about the Knicks and Madison Square Garden on Monday.
Humphries tweeted “Big game tonight! The Garden got really quiet on the way out! #Brooklyn” after the Nets beat the Knicks 88-85 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He was definitely trying to get under the skin of his opponent while trying to get some laughs.
Smith didn’t see the humor in the tweet though. Shortly after, @TheRealJRSmith tweeted “Wasn’t quiet when Kanye tore it down last month!”

The “it” in Smith’s tweet was a reference to Humphries ex-wife Kim Kardashian, who is now dating rapper Kanye West and last month the couple announced that they were having a baby. Smith’s clever key strokes have been the talk of New York and his tweet was re-tweeted nearly 65,000 times as of Wednesday night.
If this happened just this one time, I wouldn’t see any problem and would in fact think that Smith bested Humphries in the laugh department. However, this is not the first time that Smith has found himself in the middle of a “Twitter beef.”
Just last month “when Kanye tore it down,” Smith found himself in the middle of a dispute with radio MC Charlamagne Tha God of “The Breakfast Club” on New York’s 105.1 FM. Even before that in March, Smith found himself in another beef with rapper Joe Budden with the fight starting after Smith tweeted a half naked photo of a woman who was Budden’s ex girlfriend.
The NBA took action after that tweet and fined Smith $25,000 but clearly that hasn’t stopped him from having fun on Twitter.
It may seem like harmless use of an internet application, but when does enough become enough? Smith has played at the highest level of his career this year and is finally winning over New York fans that were skeptical when the team signed him (including me).
But antics such as this are holding him back and bringing a negative light to his high level of play. The negative attention that these actions brings overshadows Smith’s All-Star worthy season.
On the court, Smith looks like he has finally matured as a player, but his Twitter account would suggest that he still has some growing to do off the court. Smith’s tweet to Humphries definitely brought some laughs, but Humphries’ Nets got the last laugh after the win.
This story is not meant to take a shot at Smith, but it is here to send a message. Smith needs to forget about the Twitter drama and focus solely on the Knicks who are finally relevant again in the NBA. This team is bringing a legitimate title hope to a city that hasn’t seen a NBA Championship since 1973 and if Smith can stay focused, he can be a vital piece to the puzzle.
Maybe if this story bothers Smith enough, he’ll re-tweet it to his nearly 300,000 followers. Maybe he can come at me and I can be his next Twitter victim.
You know what they say: Any press is good press.

One in and one out at point guard for the New York Knicks. Raymond Felton is expected to return from his fractured pinkie injury Saturday, pending doctor's approval.
And, now, it sounds as if Jason Kidd might sit out with a back injury, according to Knicks beat writer Frank Isola.

BOSTON -- Carmelo Anthony and his Knicks teammates didn't know what to expect from the Celtics crowd in the first game between the two teams since Anthony and Garnett had their little spat on Jan. 7 in New York. The bad blood between Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Garnett didn’t last long.
Last night the New York Knicks beat the Boston Celtics 89-86. After a verbal spat and a bus showdown with 20 something security guards on standby, desperate measures were put into place to ensure another Honey Nut Cheerio saga wouldn’t transpire.
However last night was the polar opposite.
For the first time since 2006, the Knicks came away victorious in Boston on Thursday night. While such a win puts an end to such a frustrating and traumatizing losing streak, perhaps it also symbolizes why this a season is one more different than any other in recent years for the Knicks.Clearly an NBA powerhouse over the past few seasons, the Celtics have always seemed to have New...
