It’s hard to believe that a player who looks like a basketball player in shoulder pads could not pan out to be the player the team that drafted him could be. That might be the situation facing Dion Jordan when he walks out onto the field in Miami. The 6’6”, 250-pound defensive end is still a work in progress. Can the Dolphins be patient with him and see what he can become rather than what they need him to be?The one thing Jordan may have going against him is the simple fact he was selected by the Dolphins. Miami lost starting left tackle Jake Long to free agency and had been thought to be in the market for a tackle in this draft. With the third selection, it looked like Jeff Ireland had traded with the Oakland Raiders to select Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson. If Johnson proves to be a Pro Bowl player in his first season, and Jordan takes a while to get out of the gate, he could take some heat from the south Florida media.Jordan is considered a “raw” talent, still growing. He needs to remain in control of his body. At times, he was overrun in college. The pro game is faster and stronger and if he gets pushed back in his block, it could mean he won’t be able to finish the play. The Dolphins will need to figure out where they will play him consistently. Does he play on the end or as an outside linebacker and is used primarily as a pass rusher?Do injuries in college carry over to the NFL? He only had 14.5 sacks in his college career. And when if he suffers injuries, will he be able to recover quickly and perform at a high levels.Jordan will need to add bulk and stamina. He will be manhandled easily by stronger offensive linemen. He could easily be picked up by a tight end.If the Dolphins are willing to wait, then he could be something special. If he is pressed into action early - well the Dolphins may rethink their investment.
