Zach Miller is a solid tight end. At 6’5″, 225 pounds he’s the right size for the position, he understands how to help the run game, and he rarely makes mistakes when he is targeted. In three seasons with Seattle his production has been consistent – if not has impressive as his time with the Oakland Raiders. via espn.com This is by no means a knock on Miller as a football player. He has done everything that’s been asked of him on the field and there are a lot of teams hurting at tight end who could use him, but at the end of the day the Seattle Seahawks just don’t need Miller to succeed. Here’s three reasons why the Seahawks should cut ties with their big tight end. 1. The money doesn’t make sense Zach Miller’s contract counts for $7 million against the cap in 2014 and another $6 million in 2015. That puts him in the upper echelon as far as compensation for his position goes. Only seven tight ends made more last year: Rob Gronkowski, Jason Witten, Vernon Davis, Antonio Gates, Jared Cook, Jermichael Finley and Tony Gonzales. All due respect to Miller, his production just isn’t in the same ballpark as those guys. That isn’t to say it’s Miller’s fault. In a pass heavy offense like the Denver Broncos or New Orleans Saints he could probably put up big numbers, but that’s not Seattle’s game plan. He’s never going to see the kind of targets those other seven tight ends do, so we’re overpaying for his time. The Seahawks can save $10 million over the next two years by cutting Miller now, as opposed to asking him for a paycut, which is also a distinct possibility. However, Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports thinks that the team is more likely to let him go, and I’m inclined to agree.
