Pat Yasinskas of ESPN writes that “there’s almost no way” for the Panthers to keep both RB DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Yasinskas mentions that Williams could be the better player to retain because he has more “pure football ability” and “he doesn’t have Stewart’s history of injuries.“ However, Stewart currently has the more economical contract for the Panthers. In the off chance that the Panthers release Stewart, they would take a $7 million cap hit because his base salary is guaranteed for the next three seasons.  Williams’ contract would allow the Panthers to spread the cap hit over the course of three seasons and would create $3.4 million in cap space for next year if they were to release him after June 1st. Yasinskas adds that Carolina could always approach the two of them about restructuring their contracts. This is all brought upon them by the fact that they’re in a terrible cap situation that will almost certainly result in them parting ways with some players in the near future. If the Panthers do cut Williams, he would surely generate interest on the open market. There are concerns about his age, 29, which would almost certainly be reflected in the type of offers he would receive if he indeed becomes available.
