Found August 05, 2013 on The Cardinal Connect:
Former Louisville running back Bilal Powell is expected to have a breakout season in 2013 with the New York Jets. Powell played in just two games as a rookie in 2011 and had an increased role during his second season in the league, playing in 14 games, averaging 30 yards per contest. As he enters his third season in the NFL, Powell has a chance to be the full time starting running back for the New York Jets. During he teams annual “Green & White Scrimmage” over the weekend, Powell was impressive to say the least. “I thought Bilal Powell really jumped out on offense,” head coach Rex Ryan said following the scrimmage. “He ran the ball hard.” Now, obviously with the opportunity he’s been given, he’s really taken the reins.” Powell carried the ball six times for 41 yards against the Jets’ first-team defense. Running backs Joe McKnight and Chris Ivory were unavailable for the scrimmage. The former Cardinal showcased his ability to make plays, with one run for 24-yards and a big gain ...

Powell may be moving up RB depth chart

Mike Goodson...where are you...?  While Chris Ivory remains limited due to his hamstring, and Mike Goodson remains in the imaginations of Jet fans, running back Bilal Powell is working to make his name more widely known.  The 2011, 4th round selection out of Louisville is having a second offseason of improvement, and Rex Ryan, among others, is taking notice.  Speaking...

Rex Ryan: ‘We don’t want our guys getting booed’

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan wants fans of the team to move on from last season. “We want our fans behind us at all times,” Ryan said on Monday, via The New York Daily News. “Obviously guys make mistakes. But that’s probably the reaction that we have. We don’t want our guys getting booed, especially from our

Sanchez stumbles, Smith OK in Jets' scrimmage

Mark Sanchez rebounded from a shaky performance by throwing a 57-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Hill on the final play of the New York Jets' scrimmage Saturday night. Geno Smith, competing with Sanchez for the starting quarterback job, had the better performance while working mostly with the first-team offense. The Jets have been alternating the two quarterbacks every third...

Ryan: Fans have right to boo

Rex Ryan has moved on from last season. He hopes New York Jets fans can, too. The coach refused to tell frustrated Jets fans Monday to take their boos elsewhere, but also reminded them that this is a new season, with new hopes and expectations. "I'm not going to say I'm disappointed in our fans, but I think we need to move forward," Ryan said. "The things...

Jets list two starters on depth chart at QB; Geno Smith rumored to be gaining ground

The New York Jets are playing things diplomatically with their Quarterback depth chart. Incumbent starter Mark Sanchez and second round pick Geno Smith are each listed as starters on the team’s preliminary depth chart. Within the past week on Sirius XM NFL Radio it was implied that the competition is roughly even through the first week of camp. Of course, if things are viewed as...

Boo who? Rex says jeering Jets fans have rights

Rex Ryan refuses to tell disappointed New York Jets fans to take their boos elsewhere. The coach says Monday that fans ''have the right to do anything they want,'' including booing him or the team's players. The subject came up because Mark Sanchez, competing with rookie Geno Smith for the starting job, was booed loudly by fans at SUNY Cortland on Saturday night...

Gerard: Final 53-Man Roster Projection

It's still pretty early to tell who will make the final cut for the 2013 NY Jets roster. However, some players have already gained edges on others, and some have fallen perhaps too far back to recover. Lets take a look at the progress on both sides of the ball. Wide Receivers: Santonio Holmes Santonio is still due to make 7.5 Million this season. The Jets are really...

Report: Geno Smith Likely To Win Jets Starting QB Job

Geno Smith’s time has arrived. Amid reports that he wasn’t in the best of shape, Geno Smith is now starting to prove the naysayers wrong. The New York Daily News is reporting that Smith is almost a lock to win the Jets starting quarterback job as long as his play doesn’t drop off. Manish Mehta is reporting that Smith looked sharp in a scrimmage, and should land the job. Through...

Cromartie: Fans booing Sanchez is 'bullcrap'

It's sort of ironic that Antonio Cromartie — the player who picked off Mark Sanchez's boo-inciting pass Saturday— is the same guy who came to the quarterback's defense when the venomous chorus from the stands wouldn't let up on the maligned QB. Though he made the pick, Cromartie was not too happy with the crowd’s reaction. “I think that’s bullcrap,...

Mark Sanchez to start Jets Week 1 preseason game

Get your (best high-quality throwing) popcorn kids: Mark Sanchez was named the Jets preseason Week 1 starter by Rex Ryan on Tuesday. But despite Sanchez -- who was recently booed ... in training camp ... by Jets fans -- getting the nod against the Lions during the preseason affair Rex also noted that Geno Smith could get some reps with the first team offense as well. "Mark...

Smith gets more reps with starters, boos for Sanchez

The ball barely had settled into Antonio Cromartie’s hands when the boos began. The Jets cornerback had just intercepted Mark Sanchez on a deep pass and it was enough for a faction of the 6000 fans at last night’s Green and White scrimmage to remind Sanchez that Jets fans have not forgotten 2012. It was just another sign that many people are rooting for rookie Geno Smith to...

Teammate Backs Up Jets QB Sanchez

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is feeling home at preseason camp.  He has been hearing boos during scrimmages, so nothing has changed since last season. But Saturday night Jets defensive back Antonio Cromartie wasn’t happy with the fans behavior when he intercepted a poorly thrown Sanchez pass was reported by the New York Daily News, “I think that’s bullcrap,” Cromartie...

Mark Sanchez will start the first preseason game for the Jets, so here’s a highlight reel.

Ah, Mark Sanchez, not since the fumbly-bumbly days of Rex Grossman have we seen such a specimen. Entire highlight reels of his screw ups have been created, so we find posting one of these ‘anti’ highlight reels, lowlights if you will, a good learning experience for us all. Please, stay away from the Jets and all of their players. Except maybe Chris Ivory. Maybe. Mark Sanchez’s...

Sans Revis, Cromartie rises to the challenge

With the departure of Darrelle Revis, Gang Green’s secondary looks less intimidating heading into 2013. Jets; veteran cornerback, Antonio Cromartie, is ready to step up and be the No. 1 CB for this upcoming season. See how he handled the spotlight in the Green and White scrimmage and his opinion of New York's QB competition.
