Found September 05, 2013 on NFL Injury Report:
Bilial Powell has been named the starting running back for the New York Jets. Powell has played in 16 games for the Jets over the past two seasons rushing for 458 yards and four touchdowns. The announcement comes as bit of a surprise after the Jets brought in free agent Chris Ivory from New Orleans and veteran Mike Goodson from Oakland. When Rex Ryan was asked about the decision to start Powell he had this to say. He earned the right to start, Bilial did a tremendous job for us throughout training camp and in the preseason games as well. Early in camp Chris Ivory looked great until he suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for most of training camp and the preseason. Ivory is a vicious runner with home run capability which is something the Jets will use to keep pressure off Rookie Quarterback Geno Smith. Powell being named the "starter" seems like a formality and Ivory should finish the game with more of the workload and becoming the starter moving forward. These type of decisions are classic Rex Ryan and likely were done as a mind game to receive each players best on Sunday. With the exception of Ivory no one on the Jets offense posses big play capability, meaning most defenses will just pin their ears back and go after Geno Smith. Although the Jets defense should be top ten, the offense will be their achilles heal and will likely lead to a season of struggle.
