During a conference call a short time ago, Bill Belichick was asked about his relationship with Redskins coach Mike Shanahan. The two share a lot of NFL miles and plenty of history. Belichick entertained Shanahan at Patriots training camp two years ago when the latter was between jobs. Belichick has always talked fondly of Shanahan and with a great deal of respect. Today was no exception. ”I think Mike like me because he used to beat up on us all the time,” Belichick cracked when asked how the relationship began. ”Denver, they got us a few times.” Belichick then explained he’s gotten to know Shanahan off the field during league meetings and so on. They share a similar trait. ”He’s a great competitor,” Belichick said. ”I’ve had great respect for what he’s done, the championsihps, and all the outstanding teams he’s had and coached.” When Shanahan came and observed Belichick’s camp, the two coaches shared information on how they do things. Shanahan made note of a few instances where h

Belichick concerned by poor finish to latest win

The New England Patriots had a commanding lead. Then, they had their worst quarter of the season. So coach Bill Belichick, occasionally perky after victories, was his more recognizable dour self on Monday after taking another look at film of the fourth-quarter flop against the winless Indianapolis Colts. ''Couldn't make a first down in the fourth quarter, couldn'...

A day later, Patriots coach Bill Belichick still wants to finish: “It’s never not been a goal.”

Patriots coach Bill Belichick still wants to finish. After watching the film of the 31-24 win over the Colts, that hasn’t changed. A day after the game, his point of emphasis hadn’t changed. “We talk about it from day one,” Belichick said. “We’re trying to do that, but obviously, we gotta do a better job. Gotta coach it better, gotta play it better, we all gotta do it...

A stupid thought: Maybe Bill Belichick is happy the game turned out like it did… and links!

The Patriots won yesterday, beating the Colts by (gulp) seven. And everyone was pissed. That included coach Bill Belichick, who was more than grumble-ish after the game. No doubt, Belichick will hammer his team this week on finishing, being extra hard on them for letting the Colts hang around. There is no victory Monday, for instance, as players must be in the building today. So...

Mike Shanahan set to face friend, rival Bill Belichick

When the Washington Redskins welcome the New England Patriots to FedEx Field on Sunday, Coach Mike Shanahan will face Bill Belichick, with whom he has a rather long history. Shanahan and Belichick have faced off both as coordinators – Shanahan offensive and Belichick defensive – in the 1980s and as head coaches in the last decade, and during that time, the two have developed...

Patriots coach Bill Belichick talks about Slater, McDonald, Gronk’s blocking… and other stuff!

We hit you with a quick coach Bill Belichick update during a busy Monday that always seems hectic. Having to mix in some tape studying along with blogging forces me to juggle like a.. a juggler, I guess. Anyway, that led to just an abbreviated look at what Belichick said at his day-after-game news conference. Still, you probably got the gist of his thoughts on the 31-24 win over...

Patriots Defense Will Remain Question Mark Until Playoffs, Regardless of Stretch Performance

Judging by Patriots head coach Bill Belichick's tone at the postgame news conference, he wasn't too happy with his team's performance in the fourth quarter against the Colts. Why should he be? For that matter, why should anyone? Yes, they gave up just three points until the fourth quarter, which would then qualify said fourth quarter as "garbage time." But by...

Kicking themselves

FOXBOROUGH - Bill Belichick spent the entire week leading up to yesterday’s game telling anyone who would listen that the Indianapolis Colts, despite their winless record entering their matchup with the Patriots, would pose a challenge.

FO: Patriots nearly beat themselves

Football Outsiders continues to grind upon the Patriots weak defense: Aaron Schatz: The Patriots nearly managed to blow a 31-3 lead in the fourth quarter. When the Colts made it 31-17, that seemed like a cute backdoor cover. When they made it 31-24 with 40 seconds left, that probably gave Bill Belichick heartburn. The Pats recovered the onside kick and held on for the win, but this...

Patriots Forced to Show Up for Monday Meetings After Finishing Poorly Against Colts

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The mood was strange inside the Patriots' locker room after Sunday's 31-24 victory against the Colts. They were obviously happy to leave the building with their ninth win of the season, but they were definitely annoyed with the way things unfolded in the fourth quarter. The Patriots had a 31-3 lead with less than 11 minutes remaining in the game, and head...

Still looking for right fit

PROVIDENCE - We're headed into Week 14, and Bill Belichick is still playing mix and match with his defense, particularly...

Former Patriots WR Taylor Price is now with the Jaguars

Earlier today, Patriots coach Bill Belichick was open to the idea of bringing back WR Taylor Price, even if it was on the practice squad. “I wouldn’t rule that out,” he said. Now, he won’t have the chance. Price was claimed on waivers by the Jaguars, a source told me, and so he’ll join that team now. The second-year player from Ohio, a third-round draft pick, received about...

A good unhappy ending?

FOXBOROUGH - A week ago Bill Belichick was so ebullient, so upbeat, so expansive, so downright gabby, at the conclusion of the Eagles game, that you half expected him to say, “C’mon, guys, don’t you have any more questions?’’

Gronkowski has a field day

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- If anyone could make New England tight end Rob Gronkowski's three-touchdown Sunday seem ho-hum, it's understated coach Bill Belichick.

Colts Win the Mind Game Against the Patriots

DATELINE: HUMOR! If the NFL played games five quarters in length, the New England Patriots probably would have lost to the Indianapolis Colts. The hapless Colts came on like gangbusters in the fourth quarter, looking like a happy-go-Andrew Lucky team. Bill Belichick was cooking up a storm with no-name defenders who desperately were trying to locate which way the wind was blowing...
