Brandin Cooks has a strong choice of words while issuing warning to Cowboys about Dak Prescott
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has yet to be extended beyond the 2024 NFL season and at this point it's pretty hard to figure out if the front office will really allow him to play on a contract year this upcoming season, something Dak appears ready for.

If they do wish to keep him for the long run, veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks issued a warning while offering a strong choice of words about the second-team All-Pro quarterback.

"Indubitably, absolutely, no question," Cooks told the Gojo and Golic show when asked if Prescott should be the quarterback of the future for the Cowboys. "Last year, what he did, the first year of Mike McCarthy’s offense, for the longest he was MVP frontrunner and then I believe he finished second or third."

Cooks didn't stop there though, as he believes there's more to come when it comes to Prescott's play, which indeed reached a whole new level when McCarthy cranked up the passing game after the offense struggled in trips to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Dak and CeeDee Lamb quickly became one of the very best QB-WR duos in the league during the 2023 season as the Cowboys shifted from a conservative unit to a pass-happy offense midseason. Even Cooks got significantly involved deeper into the campaign.

That's why Cooks had a warning for the Cowboys: It's better to get this deal done now.

"And that was all done one year into Mike McCarthy’s offense," Cooks added. "I think all he’s going to do is continue to get better, continue to lead and hit his stride. If you don’t do it now, in my opinion, it’s just going to cost that much later because he’s on a mission for sure."

Recently, Jared Goff signed a $212 million contract with the Detroit Lions, averaging $53M per year, the second-highest in the NFL while setting a new NFL record for signing bonus money ($73M).

Prescott could like exceed the $60M per year mark if the Cowboys extend him, as he's widely considered better than Goff and he's got big-time leverage with a no-tag, no-trade clause which means he controls his own path to free agency in 2025 if he isn't content with whatever the Cowboys offer.

The story is only now getting started but Cooks isn't hesitating to urge the Cowboys to do what's right. We'll see if they agree with their veteran receiver.
