Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner has thrived in Seattle’s physical style of defense. After a stint in the CFL, nine NFL interceptions, and a Pro Bowl, apparently the Seahawks now feel he is in need of a pay raise. But with no extension. Hm. Via John Boyle (@johnpboyle on Twitter), “Seahawks have $3.646 M in cap space this year, [and] gave Browner a raise in final year of contract.” I really struggle to understand this one. Just to clarify, Browner is going into the final year of his current contract, and was scheduled to make $555,000 this year. It is unclear thus far how much the raise will augment this number, but from the team’s standpoint this does nothing except for hinder their ability to sign other players by taking away from their $3.646 in cap space. Maybe the Seahawks are trying to sweeten up Brandon Browner so he’ll give them something along the lines of a hometown discount after his contract is up next year. Who knows. But as a front office, it is important that the Seahawks don’t let loyalty or emotion effect their decision making, because then it shifts the focus away from what is truly best for the team on the football field. I’ve never seen anything like this happen in the NFL before. But Pete Carroll and John Schneider have cut their teeth on doing things differently, so maybe  judgement should be reserved until the long term effects play out.   Need NFL Tickets? Loading...
