According to ESPN, the Philadelphia Eagles and star wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who was recently slapped with the franchise tag, have come to terms on a 5-year contract worth a reported $51 million.

DeSean Jackson, who is one of the most explosive receivers in the NFL, held out of training camp last year, and had a rocky season. Jackson was benched for a poor performance during the Eagles-Patriots game this season, and only a couple of weeks before was suspended for a game against Arizona for failing to show up on time to a team meeting.

DeSean Jackson finished 2011 with solid numbers, though, despite allegations by fans that he didn’t seem like he was giving his all. Jackson had 58 catches for 961 yards and 4 TDs. He is the only wide receiver in Eagles history to gain at least 900 yards in each of his first 4 seasons.

Though Jackson is an exciting talent that forces opposing defenses to change their game plan, the Eagles seemed reluctant to sign him long term for a couple of reasons. The first is that Jackson is just under 5’10″ and weighs around 170 pounds. He is an undersized receiver that could potentially leave him vulnerable to injury. The second reason is because he has already sustained two concussions. Because of his slight build, and past injury history, he could literally be one hit away from being done.

In the end, it appears as though the Eagles decided to do their best to keep Jackson. His potential clearly outweighed the risk involved in keeping him.

There is no word on guaranteed money as of yet, but we’ll update as the details become available. For now, DeSean Jackson will be in the nest for at least 5 more years.
