I had done this article and lost it to a crash, so this will be an abbreviated version. Feel my pain through the web. Also, this is more of a traditional 'blog post' as opposed to normal OJT styling. Image: ESPN (Previous Camp)
Jets West Overall: It's a good idea and helps to ensure that some guys aren't sitting on their sofa's eating chips. But, at the end of the day, it's a few days of player-organized workouts and ball-toss. Sure, there will be plays run and more, but Jets coaching staff can't attend. That would go against the current CBA and count as an 'illegal' practice. Plus, not every member of the offense is going to be in attendence. That leads me to Mr. Geno Smith.
Geno Smith: Smith is not in attendance for Jets West, and will not be, according to NFL.com and others.
Does it matter?
No. The guy is in direct competition with Mark Sanchez. They're not going to be best bros.
He's still working out, just in Florida with non-Jet position players, as far as we know at the moment. Geno is already a student of the game. Smith even had a teammate wait to receive a ride home, one practice. "Come on man, you know I have to study," said Smith to the player. Obviously he cares about the job he's working now.
"But OMG, he's missing out on valuable practice time with teammates and such-es"
With teammates, sure. But he's still working his behind off. That's all that matters. Taking hang-out reps and doing squats behind Sanchez wouldn't help him all that much. I don't see other Jets players looking down on him because of it. Maybe that's just my personality, but I sure as heck stand by it.
