The Bills struggled to stop the deep ball against the Jets Sunday The Buffalo Bills can’t seem to figure out how to win in the AFC East, losing to the division rival New York Jets. Nothing seemed to go right in this game for Buffalo. The final score is misleading. The game wasn’t as close as the 27-20 final score indicated. As you may have forgotten due to his great play in the first weeks, E.J. Manuel is in fact a rookie. He definitely showed his colors this weekend. Manuel has been great at using his legs to avoid getting sacked in the first two weeks, but this week was a whole different story. Manuel was sacked 8 times by the Jets defense. The offensive line was absolutely terrible. When Manuel wasn’t getting sacked, he was lobbing up fade passes to receivers. I don’t think he completed a single one of them. I have been criticizing Manuel for constantly checking the ball down in recent weeks and now I am eating my own words. I would have been happy for him to check it down instead of putting the ball up for grabs. His accuracy was horrible. You can tell the Jets pass rush got into his head. On 3rd downs Rex Ryan threw everything including the kitchen sink at Manuel and he struggled to make the right decision. C.J. Spiller had another rough outing. Spiller was only able to rush for 9 yards on 10 attempts, much to the dismay of his fantasy owners (like myself). He just could not get anything going. So many times he tried to get around the corner but just couldn’t get passed the rushing linebackers. Did I mention that the offensive line was horrible? Defensively, Buffalo again struggled to stop the run. Bilal Powell rushed for 149 yards on 27 attempts. Who in the world is Bilal Powell and why did he look like Adrian Peterson this week? Buffalo could not get this man down on first contact. Powell was running through people like Bo Jackson in Techmo Bowl. Buffalo’s secondary took another blow this week. Cornerback Leodis McKelvin went down with a hamstring on the second play of the game, forcing yet another back-up to play big minutes. In case you forgot, Buffalo’s secondary is already severely depleted with injuries to Stephon Gilmore and Jerious Byrd. With McKelvin going down, Justin Rogers was forced to cover Jets receiver Santonio Holmes. I use the word cover very loosely. Jets quarterback Geno Smith picked on this young man all game. The two long touchdown passes both happened on Rogers’ watch. The MVP for the Bills was wearing a striped uniform. The only reason the Bills were even remotely in this game was because of penalties. The Jets came close to setting the NFL record for penalties in a game with 20 for 168 yards (the record is 22). If the Jets didn’t keep shooting themselves in the foot, I don’t see how this game isn’t a complete blow out. To the Jets credit, they absolutely out played the Bills. I was riding high after the amazing win against the Panthers last week, and this week I have crash landed back to reality. If Buffalo’s secondary can’t keep quarterbacks under 300 yards, it’s going to be a long season. Hopefully next week we can get back to winning. (Checking who we are playing…) Baltimore at home. Not looking good.
