The Carolina Panthers are eager to start the season and like most teams in the NFL, they have high expectations. In fact, they are so high center Ryan Kalil placed a full-page ad in local paper, guaranteeing a Super Bowl victory. The football betting oddsmakers are not sold on the idea.

In the Super Bowl preview, the Panthers were not picked as a long shot, and in the NFL Win Total Predictions for every team, the Panthers were labeled an “under 7.5 wins” pick. For those that believe the Panthers have a legitimate shot of winning it all, the odds are in your favor.

Are Cam and the Panthers Super Bowl bound?

At Just Bet, a top rated online sportsbook, the Panthers are 5-to-1 to win the NFC South, behind the Saints and the Falcons. Those odds balloon to 21-to-1 to win the NFC and the current odds to win the Super Bowl are mind-blowing! If Ryan Kalil is right and he bets on the Panthers to win the Super bowl, he will be a very rich man. So why is he so excited about this season?

For starters Cam Newton is playing quarterback and he looked great in his rookie season. If Newton can avoid a sophomore slump, the Panthers will be a tough team to beat. Newton became the first player in NFL history with 4,000-plus yards and 500-rushing yards in a season.  The AP Offensive Rookie of the Year paid instant dividends and frustrated opposing defenses. Newton gave the team a talented leader and the end result was that Carolina won four of its final six games last season. Now they look to carry that over to 2012, and if they can, the Panthers have a shot to surprise.

The Panthers will also get back some key players, especially on defense that were not able to contribute a year ago. Linebacker Jon Beason will be one of the vital players back on defense that could change the landscape of this team. This will be an automatic improvement to a team that was 27th in points allowed a year ago.

The Panthers schedule, aside from road games at Philadelphia and Chicago, is filled with games that the Panthers can win. They host tough teams like Dallas, Denver, and the Giants, but if they can establish a home-field advantage there is no reason to believe the Panthers cannot make the post season.Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Football Betting Angles: Although the Panthers did not have a winning record a year ago at home it is interesting to note that they are 10-1 against the spread as home dogs of greater than 7 points. With early games against the Saints and the Giants, this trend could play a big role in early in the NFL season.

Carolina Panthers Prediction: While I appreciate the optimism of this young squad, the Panthers will not win the Super bowl. They have enough talent to make a run at the NFC Wild Card, but it will be close. They have a very tough schedule to start things off and if they fall down out of the gate, it could be a long season. When the dust has settled the Panthers will have an 8-8 win/loss record in the regular season, but one thing is for sure, they will be fun to watch.
