PLAYERS: Carson Palmer
TEAMS: Oakland Raiders

Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer said on Wednesday that he’s “happy” to return to the Raiders and that they’re close to becoming a “championship” team.

Some people believe the Raiders are in a slight rebuilding mode this coming season, but Palmer doesn’t see it that way.

“As far as being close to a playoff team, it’s more than that,” Palmer said per the Contra Costa Times. “We’re close to a championship team. There’s a lot of work that needs to be put in and a lot of hurdles that we need to get over, but we need to be heading into this season thinking more than just playoffs.”

I think it’s great how confident Palmer is in his teammates, but let’s be honest, the Raiders haven’t made the playoffs in ten years and they couldn’t even make it this past season, when team’s like the Broncos and Chargers tried to hand it to them.

I’d give the Raiders at least a couple more season’s before they’re a playoff contender.

Carson Palmer says forget playoffs, Raiders are close to a championship contender

The last time the Raiders finished a season with a record above .500, Rich Gannon was under center. That was 10 years ago, when the 11-5 Raiders were destroyed by the Bucs in the Super Bowl. Since then, life in Oakland has not been easy. The Raiders have improved a bit recently — with 8-8 finishes the past two seasons — but they have work to do before becoming a playoff contender...

Report: Raiders will cut Wimbley, if new deal doesn’t get done

According to Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, the Oakland Raiders will cut linebacker Kamerion Wimbley if he doesn’t restructure his contract. Wimbley is scheduled to make $11 million in 2012 with $6.5 million guaranteed. In order to get under the salary cap, the Raiders need to avoid paying a chunk of his salary by having him redo his contract, or they’ll be forced to release...

Raiders place franchise tag on S Tyvon Branch

The Oakland Raiders have placed the franchise tag on safety Tyvon Branch to keep him off the open market in free agency. General manager Reggie McKenzie announced the decision on Thursday, saying he hoped the team could work out a long-term deal with Branch before next season. The franchise tag number for safeties is expected to be about $6.2 million next season. Branch, a fourth...

Raiders K Janikowski ordered to take anger management classes

Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski was ordered Wednesday to attend anger management and substance abuse classes stemming from an alleged incident in which a shoved a woman in September 2010. Janikowski must perform 30 hours or anger management and substance abuse classes and another 30 hours of community service. A judge in Walnut Creek, Calif., ordered that Janikowski...

Carson Palmer: We’re close to a championship team

We haven’t heard much from Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer after the Raiders shook up their front office and coaching staff, but he broke his silence in a radio interview on Wednesday. Palmer, who came to Oakland in a trade engineered by former head coach Hue Jackson, said that he was “happy” to return to the…

Report: LB Wimbley will be cut if he does not restructure's Jason La Canfora has reported that a source has told him that if Raiders' LB Kamerion Wimbley does not agree to restructure his deal, the team will cut him before the start of the season.  The team would still owe Wimbley $6.5 million guaranteed but would save the remaining $4.5 million in his salary this season in addition to avoiding a trigger in his deal that...

Kamerion Wimbley: How to Turn $600K Into $48M in Just 6 Months

The Oakland Raiders and Kamerion Wimbley have a very curious history behind them.  After the 2010 season, the Raiders were pretty impressed with Wimbley’s play.  After all, he did lead the team in sacks with 9 (one of Al Davis’ favorite stats).  You add his 58 tackles (46 solo) and you have a solid player [...]

Sebastian Janikowski to attend Anger Management

Ah, yes.  Sebastian Janikowski is a true Raider. Nasty and dirty and he’s just our kicker.  Got to love him. Janikowski just looks like a head case. Janikowski, 33, must perform 30 hours each of anger management and substance abuse classes, as well as 30 hours of community service. He must also stay away from [...]

Raiders place franchise tag on Tyvon Branch

The Raiders have used their franchise tag on Tyvon Branch, a great move for the Raiders.  Tyvon is an extremely underrated player, playing in an undervalued position at safety.  Teams avoided Tyvon last year like the plague and can’t say I blame them.  Why wouldn’t avoid Branch, when you can just throw at Routt and [...]

Raiders face a key deadline in Wimbley deal

As the Raiders try to reduce dramatically cap a commitment that currently exceeds $145 million, the cross hairs initially have landed on linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. He’s due to receivea base salary of $11 million in 2012, $11 million in 2013, $10 million in 2014, and $11.5 million in 2015. But here’s the bigger problem, more…

Raiders will cut Wimbley if he doesn’t take pay cut

We passed along a report two weeks ago that Kamerion Wimbley would not be interested in taking a pay cut to stay with the Raiders. We now pass along a report from NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora that the Raiders will cut Wimbley unless he takes a pay cut. Using the transitive property, Wimbley is…

Top 5 NFL Franchises Of All Time

5. Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders The Raiders were a top team to beat for years, they have a regular season record of 426-351-11 and they looked good last year until Jason Campbell went down; and much respect to the late Al Davis. Davis was probably one of the most inspiring owners in NFL history, and it all started with one simple "Just Win, Baby," and from then on, they...
