Chargers’ Jim Harbaugh makes notable changes at OTAs

Only time will tell how the Chargers fare with Jim Harbaugh, but it seems like there is already a stark difference from Brandon Staley’s approach with the team. It is not a surprise, as Harbaugh is one of the more unique coaches in football. That style had success with the San Francisco 49ers, but ultimately wore thin and led to him going to be the head coach at Michigan, where he won a national title in the 2023 season.

It is interesting to see that the Chargers are focused on conditioning and seemingly going back to the basics to build a foundation without distractions. Los Angeles has struggled with injuries in recent years, and Harbaugh hopes that this new approach keeps his important players healthy in 2023.

Jim Harbaugh’s approach with the Chargers

Harbaugh’s style was reflected in the draft with the No. 5 pick. Looking at the depth chart, many would assume that a wide receiver like Malik Nabers or Rome Odunze would be the pick in that spot, but the team went with Notre Dame tackle Joe Alt. Harbaugh is known for being a coach that likes to have a strong running game, even though Condon did note that the Chargers have not been afraid to throw the ball with Justin Herbert in OTAs so far.

Forming a tackle duo or Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt shows the priorities of Harbaugh. That could be one of the best tackle duos in the NFL if Alt lives up to expectations. It would help establish the running game that Harbaugh wants while also giving Justin Herbert time to throw.

This year, the Chargers will likely not have the complete roster in Harbaugh’s eyes, but the hope is that a foundation is built. With the quarterback already in place with Herbert, the roster does not necessarily have to be perfect for the Chargers to be competitive and contend for a playoff spot this season.

It would not be a surprise if the Chargers bounce back in the 2024 season with the coaching change, especially if Alt is able to help keep Herbert upright.
