Chargers’ Justin Herbert Named Most Overrated QB In The NFL

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is oddly polarizing. Some feel he is an elite player, while others aren’t impressed with him at all.

There is no doubt that Herbert’s stock has taken a hit over the last couple of years. While he enjoyed a tremendous start to his NFL career, his lack of playoff success is starting to wear thin on many.

That’s precisely the reason why Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay has labeled Herbert the most overrated quarterback in the NFL.

Kay instantly mentions Herbert’s contract, noting that his $52.5 million average annual value makes him the third-highest player in football behind Joe Burrow and Jared Goff.

The difference is that both Burrow and Goff have gone to the Super Bowl before. Herbert has only played in one playoff game and lost.

Not only did Herbert lose, but the Chargers blew a 27-0 lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars. This was during the Wild Card Round in January 2023.

Obviously, Herbert it not solely responsible for the loss, but because he is the quarterback, it is a major blemish on his resume, especially considering that Los Angeles then proceeded to go just 5-12 the following seaosn.

The 26-year-old is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 65.1 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 93.2 in 13 games. He missed the last four weeks of the season due to a finger injury, but LA was out of playoff contention by that point, anyway.

Herbert, who played his collegiate football at the University of Oregon, was selected by the Chargers with the sixth overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.

He enjoyed a terrific rookie campaign, totaling 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns and 10 picks. Then, in 2021, Herbert made the Pro Bowl after racking up 5,014 yards, 38 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

The Eugene, Or. native has regressed since then, and while he is obviously supremely talented, people are beginning to wonder if he has the “it” factor needed to become a truly elite quarterback in the NFL.

Herbert will face arguably his stiffest challenge yet in 2024, as Los Angeles parted ways with its top two receivers in Keenan Allen and Mike Williams this offseason.

We’ll see if Justin Herbert can respond to some of the criticism with outstanding play next season.
